As the title says.
If/when you're searching for a new job, do you tell your current employer?

Should you wait until you've actually secured a position with a new firm, or should you tell them long before you even get an interview?

:)

I'd wait until you've got an interview so they know you're serious and not just trying to get a raise.

I would wait until after the interview and new employer had confirmed that i had the job before telling boss and leaving.

If you tell the boss and then nothing comes of the interview, your pretty much ruled out of any promotions because its not guarenteed that you will stay.

Is that a serious question?

Yep, I was being serious.
My current employer has done a lot for me in the past, I didn't want him thinking I was being devious and going behind his back.

I was just after some opinions.

Well maybe just tell your current employer that you're unhappy and try and work something out? Why are you changing jobs?

Besides it looks bad if people know you are looking for a job and you fail to get one.

Just thinking, a potential employer could phone up my current employer and ask for a reference though ;)

Anyone stupid enough to do that isn't someone you want to work for.

Company's screw you if they need to and it benefits them. So why shouldn't you do the same, don't tell your boss. Long gone are the days where company's look after their employees and provide jobs for life. You need to look after number 1.

God no.

Keep your job hunt personal. Telling your employer you're looking for a job is a sure fire way to get all the crap work until you do!

Some boss's I've told and others I haven't.

I warned my boss Shelley last time as I was applying for another position in the company and didn't want her to hear from anyone but me.

I told my boss Charlo on Friday I'm going to quit, not that I have another job to go to or I was actually going to for a while but I was annoyed and needed to vent :p He said he'd quit too then, and we left early. Both us us had to come back today though :(

Exactly, when I've been looking for another job I've let them know that I'm not particularly happy in the job to see if they can do anything, but not actually mentioned I'm looking for another job.

When i went into my review over a year ago, i told my employer that i was looking at the job market to see what other people were currently doing. I was researching the market, with an idea to perhapes leave. Thanks to this my employer went ape and proceeded to throw lots and lots of money at me :D
