Searching for an FPS like Half Life 2 + Expansions

Look in the sticky.

TC.

Nice thread I'll page through it later.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have a look at Singularity/Red Faction. The rest I have unfortunately played and completed.

I might just download some mods and play through HL2 for the 4th time. The expansions were excellent as well, should keep me entertained for a couple days.

Doom 3 had a story? I thought the aim of the game was to walk from 1 Door with Imp hiding behind it to another?

Has the OP tried Portal? Not exactly 'action' per se but you can't get more epic than Portal... especially with Portal 2 coming soon.

doom3 has got to have more of a story than portal :p

Ooo another thought. Possibly Chronicles of Riddick? 2 games (I beleive you get the first anyway when you buy the second, might have changed though). Nice story, good shooting and fighting, nice gameplay.

Perhaps, though all of it is neatly laid out for you in handy PDA reading form because they couldn't be bothered to work it into the game...

Besides, if you have a great story but the delivery is crap then its meaningless. Portals delivery is absolutely flawless.

but portals story isnt good at all, and besides portal isnt really a FPS is it.

ive never played them, but what about the red faction games?

Portals story is basic, not bad. Its delivered brilliantly with all the other bits that make the game so good. And the portal gun is still a weapon you fire. Sure it may be an FPS/Puzzle game but its a damn sight more an FPS than Mass Effect and Red Faction Guerilla which were also suggested.

And the OP doesn't seem to want games earlier than HL. The original RF was a good game, never played the 2nd but i don't think it got as good reviews.

Portals story only comes into play near the end when you are approaching the fire, before that you would be forgiven for thinking there was no story. the gameplay is what kept people going then the story (when it came) was the icing on the cake (no pun intended). To be honest though I would assume the OP has played portal since he has played HL2 + eps (assuming he got the orange box ofc).

I'm going post a negative post now and say that you will never find another FPS anywhere near as good as HL2. I did a full re-playthough of all the HL's a few months ago and it's astounding how good they still are, especially HL2.

Just to counter this argument. I started playing through HL2 for the first time a few weeks back and was astounded at how boring it was. Much like the first game really.
Quite why it's so highly regarded remains a mystery to me.

If you want to play a real FPS game that doesn't simply dictate your movements from one end of the level to the other, try Stalker: Call of Pripyat which was a tremendous game and you actually felt like you were able to explore the mysteries of the game.

Sure theres no explanation of how you got in there but its blatantly obvious something is up and the AI is weird. Its still storytelling even if it is a kinda tutorial. Depends how you look at it but the story starts from the beginning with subtlety and obviously reaches a turning point at the fire.

could also look at FEAR1/2. althogh i havnt played 2 the first was enjoyable.
theres also Prey which again ive not played but i heard good things abotu it at the time, worth a read up about :)

and one really enjoyable FPS game i played was condemned 1, one of the rare games i completed actually :p

Could that be because you clearly don't like traditional FPS games? Stalker is a sandbox FPS but its actual story is still incredibly linear once you get into the missions. The difference really is just how you go about it in between with Stalker obviously been far more open. The underground labs in SoC for instance are no different to a HL or HL2 level, theres only 1 way, perhaps 2 in a short fork at best, with scripted events.

Going to go back into the vaults for this one, but what about Realms of the Haunting? Very creepy and atmospheric, fun epic story, but probably quite difficult to gat hold of nowadays. A great contender for GOG though.

Portal
Amnesia (Survival Horror)
CS:S (Online multiplayer, same controls as HL2. Most played online FPS (yesss.. above COD:MW2)
Bioshock The original I liked more than 2. But I think whichever you play first is likely to be the most enjoyable.
Garrys Mod Source engine, same controls as HL2 but you spend time building using HL2 props. It's a different kind of entertainment, but definitely worth the price it's at on steam <£10. Online play too and plenty of mods avaliable.

Didn't like Singularity; don't like the smoothed aiming and engine, makes it play like a console game.
