Sega mega drive 2 console or the original, which to buy

Has anyone ever purchased from consolepassion :( because i'm getting nothing but grief from him, bought the modded megadrive from him took 10 days to arrive and wont even play pal games, it's not a case of clean carts, its a case of the copy protection going off, even though it is set to play pal carts.

Sent photos to him to prove it as well the red console light on and the copy protection on screen.

He wont have it that his mod has failed, the first thought i had was he would have at least offered me another console or a refund but refuses.

So goes to paypal dispute or and court don't allow people to rip me off ever.

Modified Megadrives? I thought the only 'modification' needed to play imports on a UK consoles was to file away part of the cartridge slot, because the carts were a different shape?

Exactly what we did when I was a kid. Used pliers to crudely snap off some of the cartridge slot so we could get some random Japanese shoot em up cart in there, worked fine :)

Same here, it was just the edges of the sides of the cartridges that were shaped differently and bigger. I had no problem playing with many Japanese games on my PAL MegaDrive, especially those useful 8-in-1 type game cartridges. Now of course this was on the first MegaDrive and I never tried them on a MegaDrive 2.

Another +1. You could sit at the PC with an emulator and a different pad, but it's just not the same experience.

Give me a TV, a comfy chair and the proper controller every time. :)

I also find that the 8/16 bit consoles look remarkably good on modern TVs given their age.

You could sit at your TV with the same pad and an emulator, with enhancements and have it better than the original.

I always thought the original Sonic the Hedgehog had stunning visuals. Not meaning the use of special effects or anything like that but just the quality and vibrancy of the colours.

I think the very first mega drives were region free, then they change to region locking.

This is how he explains his switchless mod, says pal carts run at 60hz too but mine don't, and the colour is awful bright pink and green.

The snes i bought off someone from ebay is perfect.

The guy just email me that did the mod says as
The fact it won’t play a PAL game on a PAL console suggests the mod is working, otherwise the game would work

I disagree. ;)

I'd personally get a lot more satisfaction playing the original as it was intended. Playing through a Link to the Past at the moment and there's no way I'd get the same from it if I plugged my PC in and emu'd it up.

Not to mention having a shelf of carts being far more pleasing to the eye than a folder of .roms :p

Actually yes but it's gone that funny colour with age. I'd have to see if I still had the power cable and TV cable though as I've not used it in many years.

Snes can use the same AV cable as the N64 and Gamecube, and you can get them very easy from certain auction sites.

I have a few retro consoles/computers with a lot of games, i have a snes, PC engine, commodore 64, spectrum and amiga.

Ive got a usb competition pro for playing the amiga, spectrum and commodore 64 games, and a usb snes controller for playing snes and pc engine games. I do like owning the original consoles/computers and cartridges, but unless you have a rubbish old CRT tv no bigger than 20", you lose the authentic feel you get with retrol consoles, and they look awful on a big screen without enhancements. Playing the snes through my tv is far more pleasureable with viewing enhancements is far more enjoyable for me than playing it on the original console, this is even more pronounced on old computers when using a standard old aerial plug.

Anyway, its all about choice, its great than there is the option, i love the physical feel of old games, the smell of them, the history, that's why i buy them, but for actually playing the games, emulation wins for me for a number of reasons, but if you have the controllers and the system, its win/win.
