Sell the BMW 540i and get a smart car?

Howdy.

Now the BMW 540i is an awesome car in every respect, fast, good looking, luxurious - BUT, I only really drive about town.

I am also concerened about it's horrendous C02 emmisions. I am not a tree hugger or anything, but me and the GF are in the stages of self building a 100% sustainable energy efficient house. The 540i sorta goes against what I am trying to acheive with my carbon footprint.

I kind of like the smart cars. As I said I work from home so all my driving is around Brighton. I have some issues with them though:

A). In our curent road and travel network, a larger car is going to be safer. There are a lot of drivers out there and some are very bad ones indeed.

B). It is luxorious, I have leather, toys and air-con. (possible in a smart, but not the same experience).

C). I am 6ft 3" - will I fit in a smart car?

D). The 540i is a 4.4L V8 so goes like stink, although I am not to bothered about acceleration and stuff, having the power is nice (from a saftey point of view of course).

E). Repair and tax (possible new gass guzzeler taxes soon) are more then they are worth as I don't use it daily.

If I had a facility to park 2 cars, I would get a smart in a flash for town use, and save the 540i for longer journeys.

Decisions...

Lol at all the safety points of view, yeah right.

Sorry mate a bit harsh but here goes, you cant have your cake and eat it.

Personally i drive a high C02 motor, and i dont care,no matter what we do in the UK, china and india will gazump us.

I say so the environment, we will all be dead by the time it all goes **** up :p (that is a joke btw, i actually do care)

What's your mileage? If you were to sell it, it'll still exist just someone else will be driving it. It would be better for you to keep it and do 5,000 a year than for you to sell it to someone else who drives 15,000 miles a year. Also - if you buy a new car, more energy & CO2 will have been involved in manufacturing it than will be used in continuing to run your BMW for a while.

Frankly?
Your a fool for selling your BM, but then again I am biased :p, why not get something in between that you can at least drive on a motorway if needs be.

Last time I looked there were smart cars on the motorway...

As I stated, I use the motroways about twice a year.

Just seems a bit OTT tbh, your doing your part with the house, how much better will a smart car really be for the environment, becuase its not as if you are destroying the 540....Your giving it to someone else who is still going to pollute.

They are there, but I doubt it's easy to drive one on a motorway, and I don't wanna know about what will happen in an accident (no matter what ncap says, they dont test the car hitting the central barrier at 70mph and then doing 2 barell rolls and then colliding with another car.)

To be honest, with a lot of thought, I could probably come with a handful of realistic reasons as to why selling the 540 may potentially increase your carbon footprint.

But, I cba at the moment :p

If time permits I will!

the carbon emissions in producing your new car will be more than you will ever emit driving the 540 :)

Well something like that is true for new cars isn't it, more resources and emissions are given out making something like a Prius than you would normally emit driving a guzzler.

Yeah, I heard that most of the carbon used in a vehicle is making the thing in the first place. Plus it will still exist after you sell it on.

Keep it :)

Why not go the whole hog and get a hybrid. Then your smugness will be complete.

PS not an insult anyone who has seen series 10 of southpark will know what i am on about

Why not get a luxurious diesel and run it off Biodiesel? If you wanted to be even greener, you could make the stuff yourself collecting waste oil from local takeaways!

Please do you think you will never see the affects in your life time? You will see worse before you see what CC will do.

I have a LPG car and even better it is older then half the people on the forum so
theres no worry about the waste of new car plastics, etc
Though it pains me, I would be willing to swap with you. :D Oh and I'll plant an acorn in the local forest for free. deal?
