I have just sold my mums car, and the buyer should be coming to collect it in an hour or so. He inspected the car thoroughly yesterday, test drove it etc. He made an offer which my mum decided to accept so he should be arrving to collect it in awhile.

Since I have never sold a car before I just need abit of advise. I don't want him coming back to me later on down the line saying he has some problem so it's basically sold as seen so do I need to make some sort of receipt? What should I include on there, don't want to miss anything important out!

Quick replies needed, thanks :)

I sold my car a couple of weeks ago, and used the following as a receipt/agreement:

Receipt of Car Acceptance & Sale.

Make:
.....................................................................

Model:
.....................................................................

Registration No:
.....................................................................

Mileage:
.....................................................................

Registration Document completed by buyer/seller: Yes / No

Registration Document (V5) exchanged: Yes / No

Buyer Statement of Acceptance.

I have fully inspected the car and am happy with the condition and representation given by the seller.

Buyer Sign:…………………………………………..

The undersigned purchaser acknowledges receipt of the above vehicle in exchange for the cash sum of £...................... being the price agreed by the purchaser with the seller for the above named vehicle, receipt of which the seller hereby acknowledges. It is understood the vehicle is sold as seen, tried and approved by the purchaser without any representations, warranties or conditions express or implied whatsoever.

No problem, happy to help.

Do yourself a favour and take two copies. You both fill them out as required and each of you keeps one copy.

That receipt looks a bit heavy handed to be honest. Whenever I've sold a car, it's been more like this:

Vauxhall Cavalier registration ******* sold to Mr ****** on 23/3/07.
Received £*** cash with thanks.
Sold as seen.
(Both sign).

When i bought my first car had a little piece of paper signed by us both for the amount.

Second time just gave him a wad of cash took the keys and the V5.

Yup

One buyer made me write that my car was HPI clear on it which seemed a little strange. I did have HPI certificates from when I bought it, but if you are spending £6000 on a car whats another £40 to get it checked?

There's no need as long as you aren't a car dealer. If you're description of the car is accurate there's nothing he can do. If comes back saying something's broken tell him to get lost.

Never hurts to cover your butt though, and for the sake of a few words and a couple of signatures, it'd be silly not to.
