Hi folks,

I am selling my laptop, it has the official XP home cd enclosed but I wanted to let the person who buys it already have it pre-installed so I can keep AVG and stuff on there for them.

Just wanted to know is there any way I can change the bit in System properties;

Registered to;

"xxx"

Can I change that at all? Or does it require a reformat?

Thanks,

Sean

Yea your right mate,

Only reason I wasnt gonna format is that I didnt really put anything on there at all, unlike my PC lol.

I'll reformat it now, I just found the recovery disc as well, lol, Im hoping I can just use the windows CD and install it like a normal PC installation as I don't wanna use recovery discs! LOL

I would suggest running a shredding program too to totally destroy all personal stuff as its still recoverable after a format.

Damn, just realised I don't have the XP Home cd, it's just a recovery cd! The disc I thought was XP (as it had all that barcode stuff on it) is Microsoft Works 2002 lol.

Ah hang on... It says in the book there is no physical CD for XP, its on the recovery disc...

Its extremely difficult to recover information after a format. Unless you know something that i dont? lol

Its incredibly easily, go to google, type in 'get data back ntfs' then you can download a program which will get the majority of data back and its just $40.

So get some data wiping software!

i accadently deleted the partition on my server with my entire life on it!

i managed to recover them all! thank god!

Have had to do this several times and it's easy as pie. I too would be interested in what a good shredding program is.

Data recovery is easier then most people realise, its always a good idea to properly wipe any hard drives before you sell them, though this obviously depends how valuable the data on the disk beforehand is..... of course if you're selling a hard drive to your granny i don't think you have much to worry about.

On another note, there is applications that can change the registered name on XP, i think you might be able to do in XP some way to, but its not something i've had to do in ages. (Pre-emp Disclaimer: Yes there is legit reasons for doing so)

As already said....really easy to recover after a format with the right programs. Shredders overwrite it at least 7 times to totally destroy it!!! Takes ages to destroy it properly and also ages to recover but best to be safe.
Plenty of progs out ther to do it some of them free too!

Just change it in the registry
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization keys
