I know it's normal procedure to ask for recommendations before buying stuff, but I've just bought the following:

Sennheiser HD555 - £59.99
Creative Audigy 2 Platinum - £20 from MM

to replace some rubbish earphones and onboard sound. I assume that I'll notice a decent improvement? Did I make a decent choice? Also, will I be able to use the HD555s with my iRiver mp3 player or will a heaphone amp be necessary?

Cheers:)

I have HD555 and used to use them with an Audigy2 (now X-Fi). Seemed fine to me although not a massive improvement over previous cans I've used (~£25 jobbies from Panasonic/Technics). So I was somewhat disappointed having spent £70 on them, certainly a lot better than earphones though. To be honest I notice the comfort more than the audio quality, I find most head/earphones get a bit uncomfortable after wearing them for hours.

Onboard sound can be vary varied in quality but I would imagine you will notice an improvement moving to an A2. Apart from anything else you get decent EAX2/3/4 support which is widely used in many games.

I've used an X-Fi Music soundcard in games and the audigy 2 I use on my main system. I can't honestly tell the difference. My audigy 2 has performed perfectly well since I got it a few years back.

I really like my 555's. Sometimes I think the main speakers are on, they're that good.

I must admit. I have had mine for over a year and i still feel the quality everytime i use them.

I think if i broke them, id just buy another pair (or maybe even the next set up). But the 555's are brilliant for £60, i think i paid £90ish.

Paid £50 for mine some months back, upgraded from the HD485 and like yourself will use them until they're broken. I will then make it an excuse to buy the next model up.

Incremental! that's the word of the day :p

I've used the HD555 connected directly onto the XFI gamer btw too but it's still not as rich or as deep as when you connect the card to a proper stereo amp then the headphones on the amp or use a headphone amplifier. Headphones like this need amplification from a PC sound card if you wnat to hear things how they're meant to be heard :)
