Sennheiser HD555 to HD595 an upgrade? I certainly say yes!

The issue I'd personally have with buying HD595s is that you can now pick up a mint, almost new condition pair of HD600s for not much more at all. The only issue therein is you would need to buy an amp to get the best out of them, and I'm not talking a £100 Project Headbox either (I have one of these as a backup amp and for using with my TV, it's just not much cop at driving hungry cans really).

It does offer a nice upgrade path though, and the headphones simply won't drop to bits a couple of years down the line. I have a spare pair of 20 hour HD600s in my attic, which I can't make my mind up whether to sell or not. I have HD580s which are comfier and are used all the time, but the earpads are almost knackered, and the headband pad died long ago and has since been replaced by a bit of foam. I'm slightly tempted to use the HD600s as spares, as a new set of earpads and the headband foam could easily cost £70. I'd also have a spare pair of drivers to hand should I need them...

I'm not trying to pooh-pooh anybody's purchase here at all, just waffling an opinion if anything. :o

I find the HD595's unbearably loud above 10% volume. I'd be long deaf before I needed an amplier, the plastic started vibrating or the driver died. My hearing is as sensitive as a cats.

Amplifiers aren't just about ramping the volume up. They can improve some headphones at low volume too. I prefer to think of it as allowing headphones to reach their potential. Still, HD595s aren't the best candidates for demonstrating that.
