both are perfectly fine depends if youre an audiophile or not ive got the hd555's and the sound is really good especially with my x fi...

dont think youll be disappointed with either..

You don't need to be an Audiophole to enjoy either can, both are Audiophile quality easily once broken in.

I have the 555 right now (used through my NAD amp for PC gaming and music etc) and it's astonishing after a few hundred hours of burn in, it continues to mature too as I now notice the bass is more refined and higher frequencies well balanced.

I have had various cans in the past from Koss to Grado and Technics and sony as well as other Sennheiser models but will continue to drive the 555 cans into the ground and then buy the next model up ;)

The Big difference between Grado and Sennheiser is their target audience.

Sennheiser often cater for the more entertainment enthusiast, someone who likes a wide soundstage so their cans often suit gaming and movies better than anything else whilst Grado are more of a music lovers type of can putting the listener in the front row with a more central soundstage.

My only gripe with Grado cans is the comfort, to get them comfy you will /need/ to do some DIY, pad your own headband and fashion some custom earpads or buy SR80 pads if you have the SR60.
The earpad swap alone from SR60 to SR80 ones slightly changes the sound you hear and the SR60 sounds more like the SR80.

Grado sound quality is sublime though out of the box, you can hear everything and bass is just so powerful but present.

I really liked the Grado but ultimately had to sell them on due to them being terribly fatiguing and uncomfy after a few hours of usage. Nothing beats Sennheiser for comfort, they're extremely light and well padded, you don't even notice they're on your head after a while.

So I'm afraid its going to be the HD555, as I only have mp3's and a few CD's meaning I probably won't notice the difference.
Nice choice. Had a few sets of headphones in the past and these surpass tham all.

I'm running mine off a Pro-Ject Head Box II. Not massively expensive and help to define the soundstage and tighten up the bass.

Think the whole lot cost around £100.

gt

P.S: I agree with mrk. I plan to run these into the ground and then move onwards and upwards in the Sennheiser range.

.Merdian G08 + DAC 1 + slee solo pre-prod 2008 + HD650s

That combination is the absolute sex, don't care about price, ive never heard imogen heap sound soo good.

Il be buying some hd650s + darkvoice 336i, but first things first i need some ATC speakers :D

HD-650's are supposed to be nice in a balanced rig also.... I know my HD-580's certainly sound better balanced compared to unbalanced... I tried Hd-650's, and HD-600's, and I prefered the sound of the 600's in the end, so got some 580's. :D

As for Grado's, I find them fine comfort-wise... They sort of mould to the shape of your ear after a while. The build quality is much better on the Sennheisers tho. In fact, I don't think I've seen a bad pair of Sennheisers, build quality wise... My HD-25's have been thru a lot of abuse (been sat on, rained on, you name it), and sound great to this day. :)

EDIT: Just noticed you got an x-fi.... The 555's will be fine... If you go for more high-end cans, you'd then have to upgrade the x-fi, it's a visious circle. ;)
