Hi folks,

Upgrading finally from a 7 year old 4790k / 970 system which has served me really well but has started to be a bit flaky the last few months so I think it's time to push the button - there's only so long you can wait for the prices to drop!! I'm a bit out of the loop on what works so just hoping this is quite close.

Usage will be across the board from work / coding to gaming, blender / unity and some video editing. I went for the 3080ti as they are available and basically the same price as the non-ti at the moment it seems.

If you can you sense check the following and suggest any changes or if I missed anything or can improve / save anywhere I'd appreciate it. Want to make sure the m/b is ok and the cooler appropriate. I'm all sorted for peripherals.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £2,394.11 (includes shipping: £12.30)

I need a case suggestion for this - it will be out of the way under the desk so no need for RGB or windows, but what I do need is to have a 5.25" slot for a DVD drive. My old BitFenix Ghost case is great but I'm a bit bothered about the size of new GPUs so I figure it's worth getting a new one. Not too expensive if possible.

The monitor is to replace an old Acer 32" which is a bit too big tbh and also has ghosting in games quite badly. I read in another thread that the MSI might be better for low-lighting usage than the LG.

I have storage from existing system but I was thinking of getting an m.2 at some point so please feel free to suggest something.

Thanks in advance!!

Spending £1300 on graphics seems OTT for 2560x1440. I’d probably go with a 5900X and RX 6800XT.
Thanks for the tip - I guess I'm looking at this for the long term as I did with my last rig, I don't tend to upgrade bits as I go along so figured the extra GPU might be a better long term bet, but I'll do a bit more reading and consider downsizing a bit

Great, thanks I'll have a look at that board

It will probably be the last GPU you ever need to buy at 2560x1440. It’s just the price of the GPU alone could build a full system capable of powering that many pixels.

Yeah I would, especially with an Nvidia card. To get the most value out of Ampere you want to push the resolution as high as possible.
Ok, I'll look at the 4k screens as an option

Case why don't you just get a external dvd drive so your not limited ?

That is a valid question - my DVD drive has been flashed to ignore the region coding so I could rip my DVD collection to my NAS, I'm not sure you can do that with external drives now... Maybe I should look at an external caddy as a solution for that instead.

Crucial P5 is hands down the best overall choise for 1TB.
Crucial P5 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive= £74.99
Basically cheapest drives with extra transfer rate capability cost double.

As for cases with 5.25" bays there are only few remaining.

The only issue with 4K is the size. I wouldn’t go much under a 40” screen.

Graphics card won't stay at high level for long time, no matter how expensive it is.

Competition is now also heating with Intel releasing their discreate cards next year, so performance per money should start increasing at good rate.

Perfect - thanks for the suggestions.

If you're looking at that psu, this is the rmx version, better than the rm version i believe, and is also the new version with better fan. Also, the msi b550 gaming edge wifi board is worth a look(newer version of tomohawk but with wifi 6 thrown in) . A bit more faff but think asus doing their promo too so can get the asus b550 gaming e for £186 then you get £50 cashback taking to £136.

Sorry for caps/block caps.. On my phone and difficult enough just pasting stuff

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £140.45 (includes shipping

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely have a look at that - don't need wifi in particular though so I'm not too fussed about that

You are going to get a higher fps at 1440p than you will at 4k with the same settings. So if you play any fast paced shooters etc, then I would stick with 1440p (Or 3440 x 1440).

This is what I figured - also I think as games progress the frame rate you can run things at on a particular setup will diminish anyway so as this is intended to last me the best part of a decade I should be safe going a bit over the top now.

Agreed the 3090 i had briefly wasn't always achieving 140 + FPS at 1440P so I wouldn't call the 3080TI to overkill for 1440P either.
