Hi

We have a Dell T310 running Server 2019 standard. Doing a speedtest on the sever give us about 50Mbps download and 10Mbps upload.

If anyone connects to the server via VPN and they do a speedtest they only get 8Mbps download/upload. We have tested with users from different places and they all get the same result.

What could be causing this? We are using standard PPTP vpn.

What speed of connection do the external users have?

If both ends are running 50/10 or similar then it's going to be the 10 that sets the available speed.

In very simple terms if the remote server had 10Mbit upload, you won’t ever get more than that using it as an end point as that’s what it uses to send the data to you. You will get less than 10Mbit due to normal protocol overheads, VPN protocol overheads and the time/resources used to encrypt and decrypt the data. When you upload data to the server, you use your 10Mbit upload and get the same result.

Nothing to do with your speeds, which as explained are governed by your upload speed, but you might want to think about moving away from PPTP in this day and age.

Thanks all. Now that I think about it, it is obvious that the upload speed where the server is would dictate the maximum speed.

PPTP was just to do some initial testing with.
