Service on car is due. Last one was done on the 6 Jan 2009. Cannot get it done until 2nd week of Feb. Will this affect the service history, or do you get a grace period.

Not my car I may add! A bit of a bone of contention in the household :p

Of course it will affect the service history, it'll be... overdue. Whether its a problem or not depends entirely on the individual buyer who comes to view the car or whoever you trade the car into.

To be fair, it probably won't make a world of difference - it's only a month or so overdue. I would say it would depend on the mileage he's doing though. For instance it's going to make more difference if he's going to be doing 500 miles a week, rather than, say, 100 miles a week.

Depends on the car, the mileage and if a prospective purchaser gives a toss!

Personally, I think 12months is way too long for a service interval anyway and would be inclined to walk away, modern service intervals are geared towards pleasing company accountants rather than a cars mechanicals......

Yea, whatever, you'd walk away from a car serviced in line with manufacturers specifications because you think 12 months is 'way too long'?

Good luck ever buying a car then. I doubt your current car was serviced every 6 months throughout its life was it?

If its being serviced at 'IN N OUT' then anyone who cares enough about service history to be a bit wary of one thats a month late would walk away anyway.

I believe they stamp the service book, but it's quite a foolish move. A OEM Ford service kit costs about £50, another £50 or so and a garage would fit/stamp the book!

Oh well not my car

As I say in the part of my post that you omit to quote, service schedules are for company fleet managers and accountants rather than mechanical sympathy.

As for my current car, it has had more than a service a year from what I can tell from its S/History.

I take it my car, serviced exactly inline with the manufacturers variable servicing regieme, is about to explode and die forever then. I can sort of see your point when it comes to the 30k intervals on some of the Vauxhall diesels etc but come on, there is simply nothing wrong with a 12 month servicing interval is there?

In the case of your car, its age, miles and the average useage its had over its life (long motorway trips given the miles) then no, not an issue at all. But 12months on a car that spends its life perhaps doing the school / shopping trip rarely getting fully warmed up? No, I don't think the interval is that clever at all.

I suppose it would help if we had a bit more info about the car in the OP and how its owner uses it.....

2. Platinum MOT has also been paid for! This is a 1.25 Fiesta. I trust they service it in accordance to what Ford would usually do not just basic Oil & Filter changes like the name suggests!

I knew I should have gone along

Oh lord.

I just had a poke around there site and they claim to do a service in 30 minutes. 30 minutes!!! 30 minutes isn't enough time to let the oil sufficiently drain from the sump, let alone enough time to get the car into the workshop, allow the oil to heat up, get it on a ramp, get the service items from parts, drain/change the oil and sufficiently check over a car to the manufactures service specifications.

When will people learn? A Service entails more than an oil and filter change :(

Not a lot else to be honest, at least that takes time.

A decent service:

Air filter - 5 minutes while the oil is draining
Plugs - 10 Minutes, again while the oil is draining.
Fuel Filter - 15 minutes...while the oil is draining.

I'm sure most places won't do a very good job in 30 mins, but it's not impossible.

Also plugs and fuel filter are every 30k~

The cars oil doesn't have to be piping hot, just warm i.e. like it would on the journey to the garage. Oil is the most important part of a service, most other things will either give you a warning/stop the car working properly or won't cost the earth to fix if it's a few k overdue.

IMO i would change the oil every 6k if i was doing lots of short journeys, and i know with older cars the damage may already have been done, but that why you buy one your confident in.
