SETI@home News Vol. 114

what do people think of the 768mb 460's which have just dropped in price? i currently have a gtx 280 and im thinking of adding one. I have a maximus se which is crossfire i think. Could i get them both working seti on my board?

:mad::mad:

Dam crunching rig has crashed again - cant remote into it or ping it, looks like it has either frozen or bluescreened

Ever since I added the 3rd card it's been a nightmare keeping the rig stable - either its a bad set of drivers or I have a serious problem. Its not the PSU - its 1500W, and with a 480 and 1 x 480, it should be OK

More lost credit

....seems to be a lot of it about at the moment . Everyone appears to be pushing their respective setups beyond the ragged edge....

My PSU was pulling a little over 60% of its maximum - and it still managed to wreak havoc. Trouble is, you end up having to buy a new one to prove the old one is faulty - or risk a long drawn out rma process.....

I tried the 'force voltage' option in afterburner to see if it would help at all, that was the only change today, and it doesn't look like it helped.
Off to bed now, so I can get up at the crack of dawn and get in early to restart the box. Hopefully will be in for 6 and save 2hrs credit
My boss will love me :(

Government health warning - Seti will make you do extra unpaid hours at work

You are right Mr 51, its all about finding that sweet spot - I just need to find it quick as Reaver is breathing down my neck..
Is that a new PSU standard - 59.999% certified - thats shocking..

With the price drops in the 460 cards I'm sorely tempted to pick one up for SETI. I have a few questions before I press the Buy button though:

1. By how much do they outperform a GTS250?
2. How loud do they tend to be when running at full tilt?
3. Is the Fermi app stable enough these days to allow for an unsupervised rig?

Also, I assume a 620W PSU with two PCI-E connectors will be up to the job (this will be in a rig that has an oc'd Q9550 with very few other components), but I'd feel much happier if someone with experience says it will do the job :D

As a side, would I be able to run a 460 and the GTS250 side by side or would that be asking too much?

1. By how much do they outperform a GTS250? - Dunno a fair bit
2. How loud do they tend to be when running at full tilt? -Dunno not as loud as my 470 I would imagine
3. Is the Fermi app stable enough these days to allow for an unsupervised rig? - Yup nice and stable

I'm not much help :D

620w will be plenty

As a side, would I be able to run a 460 and the GTS250 side by side or would that be asking too much? - Nope, It will work I have a GTX260 and GTX470 running side by side and works OK

I haven't had much joy running a GTS250 alongside a GTX260.
It looked like there was two gpu jobs running , but the job on the 250 just ran for hours and timed out.:(
I updated the drivers recently to allow the new lunatics ver so I might give it another go, maybe it will work better with cuda3 etc.

Oh dear, sounds like half the team needs a big cuppa cha and a sleeper, seems like we have been hit with a run of bad luck with hardware....sod it...bad luck moves on tommorrows another day.
dum de dum de dum hmmm ahhhh :)

If your case has good airflow TT, then you might get away with your fans at 75% which won't be too bad. My 470/480's are loud with the fans at 100% though.
Im running the lastest apps on a 250, so it should be OK..
Rig had bluescreened, but all up and running now...
More troubleshooting required..
Office seems deathly quite, might get some work done now, or might go for a coffee aand browse the net until the boss gets in

We've only had the initial release of Fermi optimised apps from the Lunatics so far - bigger and better things will come along in the not too distant future.

In all fairness to the manufacturers, I suspect that a lightning strike that hit the house three weeks ago probably started the rot!!!!

I take it all is well in Tbag Towers then??? ;)

It's ticking along ok will have all my bits and pieces finished by the end of the day i hope, it takes the shine off things when you know people are having probs, wish we could all have just a few days with zero problems and everything running as it should :)
Hope you can get your watercooling finished today Mr Area51, bet you find the missing plugs too lol :)

Glad its going ok Mr Edge sah, nice bonus of earning brownie points with the boss:)

Mr Reaver - 14th place is yours, or will be soon
Had to turn the main rig off, it is freezing after about 10 mins, just a complete lock up.
Really don't know what is causing it, and can't troubleshoot as Im at work now
It's all gone horribly wrong - and I so wanted to catch Grimgoth...

Well, my new PSU has been running for just under 24 hours problem free - I think I can put that one to bed. Celebrated by cranking up the overclocks to their currently tested max settings!!!! :D

My first wc loop doesn't go in 'till Friday (that's my Saturday this week). All I've been doing to date is finalising where stuff will go, how it will be fixed etc etc - and ordering the remaining bits I didn't know I neded 'till I started playing. I have assembled the radiator/fan assembly, although that will have to come apart tomorrow or Friday and be fixed more securely. The threaded mounting holes are crap - the threads just pull through. Got some small m3 nuts n bolts in the post somewhere. Since I plan on eventually having two loops, I'll be drilling and modding the case for both loops in one go, which should save a lot of hassle further down the line. I'll post a bunch of pictures throughout Firday - so you can have some entertainment throughout the day!!!!

Looking forward to it, a whole day dedicated to meddling and hopefully bedding in the wc. If this loop works out all right, I'll put the second one in within 2 weeks.
