Setting up Asus Xonar DG and Goldring NS1000

Oh dear. :(

So, more and more being sold meaning there is a chance of having a faulty pair? or, are standards slipping? They've been around £50-£60 for a quite a time now, a 3rd to a half of what they originally cost. Either the mark up was HUGE at the original price, or they are being made for cheaper, which = more chance of faults occurring.

Just to let you know, my fault wasn't anything to do with hiss or the ANR but with the actual headband. About 2 months after I received them I noticed that one of the torx screws in the headband had been screwed in too tight and had warped the plastic, a few weeks later it had cracked and when removing them from my head a week or so ago the plastic broke off completely and without it the headband feels incredibly flimsy.

I got my pair yesterday.
Definitely a loud hiss with anr on.
You can hear it through quiet sections of songs.
Also sound quite harsh with anr on, the treble is a little too sharp.
With anr off they sound muddy.

Overall sq and seperation is pretty good.
They feel like 50 quid phones, not 130 quids worth!

Build quality is pretty poor too.
Would still recommend them because there isn't much in this price range that's any better.

To be fair it does seem that the quality of builds has been much reduced. Read around and you get lots of great reviews praising the 1000s for being solid and having exceptional sound quality. It's been my opinion that they aren't really as sturdy as I'd hoped (even before my little issue), the headband extender thing felt flimsy and there was a really irritating creek on the left ear piece, the plastic also feels pretty hollow in places too. As for the sound quality I did like the ANR and had no overly annoying hiss, yes it was there but it wasn't an issue with my music playing quietly (I specifically wanted ANR so I could use them at low volumes), however I did prefer my DR150s in terms of overall sound quality and comfort.

When I receive my replacement I'll write back and see if I notice any other issues. I do wonder if the issues cropping up now are for the long term or just issues with separate batches.

Let me know what happens, I am about to return my set as well as the Hiss is constant and unbearable.

WHAT?...quite a lot of problems...

ive ordered mine NS1000s from play.com (not received yet or posted) =/

you think i should cancel the order? or does play.com do RMA too?

the e5 amp has been posted (not received)...so dunno about that =/

Well hopefully they are just one off's and not becoming the norm. For as long as they have been selling at £50, it's only the last week or so that people have been mentioning issues. Could be just a bad batch that were made. You will find no other headphones will sound as good up to £100, and they can be returned should there be any issue.

Look at Sennheiser's HD555 headphones. They shoved the price from £50-£60, up to £80, and did nothing to resolve the design flaw that results in the plastic cracking above the ear cups. It's very possible that they were just bad batches, but none the less, it happens even to well respected headphone manufacturers such as Sennheiser.

Well I've had my 1000s a little while now (3 months or so) so not as new as everyone else in this thread, but I have had a different issue.

Everyone here is buying from the same place I believe and to be honest I've had nothing but trouble from them in the past, out of (before the 1000s) 5 orders they've managed to mess me around with 3 of them so I was loathe to buy from them but nowhere else came close to the price. I returned my 'phones on new years eve so obviously they won't have arrived yet, I've got to scan my receipt to get a refund on P&P. Maybe they've changed and sorted out all their returns issues, I'll find out soon.

ok..ive received my NS1000s..and my amp..

what shocked me was...when i opened the parcel...the headphones...its freaking small?!?!?!

when i was planning on buying it, i looks at pictures of the headphones and i thought it should be bigger... like my friends HD595 =/

never thought it'd be 'that' small... =/

I think thats everyones response when they first get it. "But its so tiny?"

You will hear hissing I guess :)

I don't use a battery, just the amp. The only time I hear any hissing or buzzing is if I use the headphones while the amp is charging and turn it up pretty loud. So try to charge the amp when you are not using the headphones. However I can still get decent enough volume before I start to hear hissing when it's charging.

I thought that the headphones were small when I got them myself. I expected them to be at least the same size as my DR150s!

As for charging the amp, yes the E5 is a portable amp which you charge from USB. If you are thinking about the ANR then it's a battery.
