As we have quite a bit of recording software available to us, I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for people to post their findings. I am a big fan of ShadowPlay and the early versions were quite big on performance hits but seems the latest version is much better. I did some testing using the in-game bench, so as not to skew any of the results and I set the same settings for both ShadowPlay and non ShadowPlay. I ran my CPU @ 4.7Ghz and my GPU at 1241/3758Mhz and used the highest settings in game.

As you can see, the performance hit is very negligible and you wouldn't even know it was recording. I remember using FRAPS many moons ago and that was a massive performance hit but times have changed and with ShadowPlay and Raptr's GVR, things have improved tremendously.

Anyway, here is my findings:

As you can see, Sleeping Dogs gives a performance hit of ~ 2.7%

Sniper Elite V2 gave a performance hit of ~ 4.5%

Tomb Raider gave a performance hit of ~ 2%

Thief gave a performance hit of ~ 3.5%

Batman Arkham Origins gave a performance hit of ~ 4%

Hitman Absolution gave a performance hit of ~ 1%

And there you have it. Very impressive in my opinion and a year or so ago, I never imagined recording gameplay to be so easy and to have such little requirements on performance. The highest performance hit was with Sniper Elite V2 and that was 4.5% and the lowest was Hitman Absolution and that was 1%.

Please feel free to add your own findings to this (good or bad) but there was a lot of work gone into this, so I would appreciate any narky digs/comments to be left out and regardless of what is what, this is to discuss what performance hit people are getting and to maybe give some tips.

For me, I found the best settings were to have a higher CPU clock and to record directly to my SSD. Not sure if recording to a mech drive makes things worse but an SSD is ideal for sure.

Can you try bioshock infinite Greg? I did a similar thing the other day and lost 22% of my frame rate, looking at your results in other games I'm thinking something's a miss at my end.

Tested it quickly and with ShadowPlay recording, I got 115.77 and with ShadowPlay off, I got 122.31, so ~ 5.5% of a performance hit.

Nice work gregster, do you know if physical/system RAM makes a differance with this??? Does it temp store it there or on disc before you save it???

It saves to a temp file location, so I wouldn't think system ram was that important.

I know that SLI gives a big hit for 4K or did do, so will have to run SLI recording to see if that is the same at 1080P

Agreed James. I have always had max quality set. Also, it isn't so much about comparing as it is seeing what does what.

Interesting results.
It seems the worst drop off was in a TWIMTBP title and the least drop was in GE games.

Regardless though the results were really good.

I still don't agree with a few of your percentages though!

Yer, I am just using rough percentages and anyone/everyone is welcome to calculate them exactly if they want. I would like to see some others do some benches and maybe we can find the ultimate way to record with minimum hits.

Fair enough, but some go to 1 decimal place, that's quite accurate for 'rough'! :)
In fairness I believe you were rounding up...

I started doing this last night and it took quite a few hours and wanted to get it done before I went to work today at 11:45 and all I had left was the calculations and with my math being so bad, I did it the quick rough way and hence why I put ~ on them :D

Youtube does tend to trash the file quality. It is free and easy and I feel we all know that youtube is a no frills video player. I have almost finished my SLI testing and massive performance hits with ShadowPlay

It does not trash it at all if you record in AVI, then encode using H264. Quality is great. It's only when you upload an MP4 file to youtube that it goes crappy.

That's something I will get into on my next 2 weeks off from work (5 weeks time). I am loving the recording feature and want to learn more (a good part of the reason for this thread as well).

SLI performance hits are a big hit and when recording, neither GPU really gets over 70% usage, so I feel for SLI, ShadowPlay needs some work.

To make it easier on the eye's, here is an averages only bench:

As you can see, some massive performance hits.

213380a0f0ded9c404a5a4947ff6fd9c.jpg

Sleeping dogs averages with ShadowPlay (SP) on were 113.5 and with SP off, 152.5. That equates to a hit of 29.3%

e8f13172db05c5e777b42bed9d3b1c3c.jpg

Sniper Elite V2 got an average of 143.97 with SP on and with it off got 207.65. That equates to a 36.2% hit on performance.

bcde444342f0f15a4125b650e62e4753.jpg

Thief up next and averages with SP on are 85.3 and off are 111.1. This is a hit of 26.2%

1b82bd37615cafbf8bcd3e108c07234b.jpg

Tomb Raider gave averages with SP on of 104.3 and with SP off, 149.8. This is a hit of 35.8%

8bb16d985f718494251f2f71095c579d.jpg

Batman with SP on gave 123 fps averages and with SP off, gave 186 averages. This is a massive 40.7% performance hit

948736ed9ed98b4467528e106e1d2633.jpg

Hitman has never been a great game for scaling on SLI systems but does see the lowest performance hit of 15.5% with averages of 96.5 (SP on) and 82.6 (SP off). Poor game for SLI users overall.

Finally, we have Bioshock Infinite and with SLI getting averages of 202.84 with SP off and a measley 132.43 with SP on, this is a big hit of 42%

So to summarise:
  • Tomb Raider - 35.8%
  • Thief - 26.2%
  • Sniper Elite V2 - 36.2%
  • Hitman Absolution - 15.5%
  • Batman Arkham Origins - 40.7%
  • Sleeping Dogs - 29.3%
  • Bioshock Infinite - 42%

When we compare this to the single card results, there is quite a contrast.

Ok so after scouring forums, it turns out shadowplay and sli has a bug causing the performance hit, comment from nvidia as recently as the end of July says it will be fixed 'soon' in an upcoming driver release. Though the bug has been known since November 2013 so I wouldn't hold your breath as it doesn't seem high up on nvidias list of priorities.

Good stuff. At least they know about it and it isn't a big issue. I ran it at 1600P to see if it helped with maybe the resolution being a bottleneck but didn't. Curious to know if any of the other recording software apps do the same.

Heh, i just watched ours side by side and they looked identical but mine didn't have the flickering hair. :D

Yer, that's what I meant, both of ours have stutter. The hair is a strange one and does that in the bench more than it doesn't but doesn't do it in the game. I am not knocking YouTube as it is free but when you watch the raw file, it has none of the stutter and the colour is far more vibrant.
