I have 2 machines on a local network, both sharing an internet connection and all their files. (I have a 4 all-in-one wireless modem and router - Dlink DSL604+.

I have recently added my laptop on an encrypted wilreless network. This works absolutely fine. BUT how do i set up my laptop to be seen on the network by my other machines and vice versa. I tried a couple of routes, but not sure, if i'm going about it in the right way - please - please help.

Many thanks Magoo

Go to Network Connections (Right Click Network Places on the desktop then Properties) then RUN 'Setup home or small office network'. Follow the wizard carefully. Also make sure that the laptop is in the SAME Workgroup and that any software firewall does not block it from being seen (hardware f.wall shouldn't be a problem) :)

doesnt he/she have to the add the folders they would like to share to "my network places"

pls clarify?

If not, can you just go to a whole drive in my computer, right click and select sharing? If yes where on the other computers will the harddrive from pc1 be shown?

You don't HAVE to do anything with "my network places". It's just Microsoft's poor way of trying to map out available network resources.

Sharing the whole drive is very dodgy as a general rule. You should mimimise what you share and what permissions you apply to those shared directories/files.

Dunno about this, but I had an issue where my laptops wouldn't see each other or ping. Turned out that my Dlink WAP wouldn't allow the wireless clients to talk to each other, some kind of security measure I suppose. Anyway the option was called 'Client security' I think. Turned it off and everything was normal.

I got this problem still. Not the same router though :(

Right.....

So can you kindly advise me on the "proper way" to share pls?

Lets say there is pc1 (this pc connects to net) pc2 and a laptop....

So each computer is going thru the router and is on a network called "WORKGROUP"

Lets say I only want to share the "my documents" folder on each pc......

Whats the "proper" way of sharing? Assuming I have not run small home/office network wizard on each pc.....if I have to do this for arguments sake lets assume I have run small home/office network wizard on each pc and they are on the apart of the same workgroup....

What next?

Please clarify and help....

Thanks

If the other PCs are currently 'networked' (i.e. sharing files), you should be able to see them in 'My Network Places' even before you start sharing the notebooks folders/files. I suggested running the wizard cos one of the steps involves enabling 'FILE & PRINTER SHARING' on it and a reboot might be required.

On my own setup/PCs, running the wizard helps and also changing the workgroup name to something else like 'HOME'.

Also, software firewall even the Windows one, you will have to configure it! Other alternative is to disable it then see if you can see the other PCs then you will know where the problem is :)

yep I am sharing this way at the moment.....I basically add a new network place and find the folder I want to share and voila.....However everyone is saying that its on the way to be doing it so I wanted to find out the proper way.....apparently I should not use "my network places" to access files .....so I was hoping to find out the proper way....

Pls clarify....

thanks for your help so far
