I honestly think people should need an advanced licence before being allowed to drive cars like that.
Unfortunately if you have the money for that sort of car, you have the money to buy your way to an advanced licence.

It's arguable people should be given a test to be exposed to adulthood - some great examples in this thread alone :p

Of course there are mistakes, mistakes that end in utter tragedy. I can't see how barrelling through a red light at approaching or over a ton is a mistake unless somebody has stuck some red-lights in the middle of a 100Mph speed limit freeway.

Bad, bad judgement.

We've all done stupid stuff. Stuff that you may think, as you grow old, oh my christ I got away with that. But the above? Not a chance.

People suck. They do dumb, stupid things to each other, and the Internet gives us a forum to analyse, over analyse, and then call each of the analysers a dick.

Of course you could, you'd just need more of a run up, or the terminal impact speed would have been far less.

It's interesting that on my fave roads, speeds that would have been utterly terrifying in my first 'fast cars' would now be borderline easy and pedestrian.
 
Never, EVER, get in a car with a Chinese person. I appreciate that may be a ridiculous generalization, but I can only go on experience. Firstly, I've been to China and somehow made it back alive. Secondly, one of our friends (who was expecting a baby the same time as my wife...) was being driven by a Chinese person here in the US (a Chinese national over on work, not a Chinese-American) when they swerved into oncoming traffic for no apparent reason at high speed. The driver of the car they hit was killed instantly and our friend suffered terrible injuries which resulted in the loss of her unborn baby. The driver survived (of course) and vanished back to China (of course) leaving this carnage behind. I was with our friend's husband when he got the phone call about the accident - not a fun time. Our friend made a full recovery (they weren't sure if she would ever walk again as her back was smashed) and I'm delighted to report she's pregnant again. She knew this Chinese person was an absolutely appalling driver and had avoiding letting them drive - unfortunately they were on a long road trip for work and she needed a break at some point.
 
There does seem to be something in Chinese culture and attitudes that has utter disregard for human life, I'm sure not every single Chinese person is out to kill you though!

Also a good lack of understanding in basic physics in here.
 
So these are my thoughts. Was he a maniac? No, not in the same way I class Anders Breivik.

Was it murder? No. At best, it was manslaughter. Whilst choosing to drive at insane speeds was premeditated, his willingness to kill someone wasn't. He did not set out in his car with the sole purpose of killing someone.

He took a risk, and ended up paying the price and even worse, killing other innocent people because of his actions. The traffic light on his side of the junction would have been red for quite a long time, he didn't even try and break that I could see.

It's simply very very sad :(
