Shops not open until 11am on sunday?

Yes that's the point. The legislation allows them to close on their day of rest/worship.

You are missing the point, if religious observance was the driving factor then the legislation would not have been enacted at all. The legislation relaxed those laws, it didn't enforce them.

It would have remained as it was.

Actually it's you who is missing the point. You need to learn the difference between an argument and an assertion.

Anyway, I'm out of this thread, don't feel like running in the special olympics just now. Here, have your smiley back.

Resort to insult when your argument fails....nice one.

I remember when I worked a Saturday job for Robert Dyas (ooh back in 1988 now) and we were 'instructed' via a head office directive to fill in their 'We wont open on Sunday' petition (as they didn't at the time).
Faced with such demands we all entered our names as 'Superman' and 'Mickey Mouse'. They've since stopped that nonsense and open on Sundays now.

I've always believed that it was to protect small local shops that make most of their money on Sunday afternoon/evening.

I work Sundays as normal days, I'm salaried to work 40 hours throughout the week, I get the same whether I work those midweek or at the weekend

I hate how short our shop hours are, I mean lots close at like 5:30 or 6 in the evening, are barely open on Sundays, etc.

We need proper late night shops ffs

Theres more to life than being able to browse the shops for an extra few hours on a Sunday.

I personally would like to see Sunday Trading Laws relaxed or abolished.

I'm not talking so that I can nip to my local DFS or Currys to have a look around at 8pm on a Sunday evening.

My personal reason would be for food shopping, as somebody else mentioned. Saturday is the busiest day of the week in the Supermarkets across the country, I hate going on a Saturday because it means I que for ages. Sunday is not much better either where I live and even if I go into Morissons or Waitrose just before they close on a Sunday afternoon, they are still rammed.

If there were longer opening hours on a Sunday, it would certainly help to ease this pressure.

Times have changed, not just in terms of religion and the diversity of religions in this country now, but working habits and hours have changed dramatically.

There are probably some shift workers who can only shop on Sunday, in this day and age you should be able to nip to the Supermarket in the evening.

I think its a good idea as it lets the smaller shops have some sunday trade, when my sister worked at Argos they could open for longer than 6 hours because the shop floor area made it exempt, despite having a huge stockroom behind.
