Was sat at work today looking at infinite telnet windows, I couldn't ignore the beams of georgeous winter sunlight making there way into the room, all the time wondering whether my new friend out on the fens was busy soaring and looking for Voles, so I squared a few things away, and begged to go early to catch the evening light before it decended into the bleakness predicted for the weekend.

I turned up around 3:30pm, camera mounted on window, centre point focus, presets set for +1/3rd of a stop for flight, and -1/3rd of a stop for anything with a dark background... Nothing appeared.. Drove up and down for an hour, still nothing apart from a Heron, was about to call it quits when I caught a glimpse through the binos, of a dark owl like shape in a tuft of grass 80yds away, sat with his feathers all puffed up.. so I waited and waited, eventually he took to the skies, with his normal routine of quartering the riverbank diving, hovering and soaring, I also managed to get pretty close this time when he landed on the mole hills, I had about 5 minutes with him messing around in the grass, its quite exciting to look into the viewfinder and see this chap almost full frame...
I also saw his/her mate about 100yds up the river, was spoilt for choice at one point.

Unfortunatley to put a downer on the evening, I went behind a bush before setting off home and discovered a dead short eared owl halfway up the dyke, looked like it may have been shot.. nothing I can do, other than if I catch anyone shooting these guys, they'll be shot to Cf card, and reported to the police, it won't be the farmer as they love owls (keep the voles and mice off the crops) most probably some awful chav.

Without further a do, tonights shots, all 300mm + 2x, ISO400/800,

Processing:

Curves,
Colour balance.
Selective highlights/shadows
Slight saturation to add some punch
Applied warming filter to some shots
USM set to 124/0.2/0 and applied twice.

really love no4

Blimey, I'll be very surprised if you don't make a pretty penny selling some of those images.

I love the one where the owl is looking straight at you :) The last one is great too.

Superb shots. They really put a smile on my face, and that takes some doing after a lousy night at work!

Thanks for sharing them.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Shot 4 was the one I actually went down for, as he did that to me last time I went, trouble is the light was too dull and it was almost a silhouette against dull sky, yesterday the light was really nice and lit him up perfectly. The way their heads turn 90 degrees to the right to look, gives them so much more character than most other birds.
I just couldn't believe him hopping on the mole hill posing for a minute, then hopping onto another one posing again, then in the grass looking sinister... With wild birds of prey its not often that happens, number 7 I found entertaining as it looks like he's plotting to take over the world, from his "mole hill of death"
He was probably trying to figure out what I was up to, driving up and down the same stretch of road at 15mph, reversing halfway up riverbanks and parking sideways, frantically reversing and braking :D

So glad I went yesterday as i'm looking out of the window now, pretty bleak tbh.

what can i say, other that they are fantastic photo's! the one where he is looking at you in flight is amazing, and i love all of the ones when he is on the ground.

the focusing is pin sharp and the detail is fantastic too. and as for the eyes, well...incredible mate.

if i'd have taken them i would be very very proud of those shots.

It was a little surreal to be honest, with wildlife most of the time is spent finding it and when it appears not messing up the opportunity as it normally happens once then its gone.. Yesterday was bonkers, its almost as though he was doing as I asked, going to give it a few days before I go back, don't want to overdo it as these birds are classed as Vulnerable or "Amber" status, I wouldn't my photography get in the way of their hunting.
