Should football have a sin bin?

Not sure how it would help, theres already punishment for things like diving, if the ref gets the call for a dive wrong, then how would a different punishment help? Mostly refs don't give cards for diving rather than the other way around of giving out too many, we want more yellow cards for diving from better reffing, not an easier out for ref's and people being more free to dive because instead of risking being sent off, you'd only be out of the game for a few minutes, potential penalty vs sinbin, huge upside, small downside....... it would encourage diving not discourage it.

Referees need more respect in general, I don't know what it is but you very rarely see the ref getting foul mouthed abuse or being screamed at in rugby, in football it seems to happen on a weekly basis though.

That's because, generally speaking, the refs in rugby are far better and actually explain their decisions without patronising the players. I have a lot of sympathy for football refs but the ones with the superiority complex usually get the most abuse and it's hard to disagree that they bring it on themselves.

That's true, there are some truly hateful refs in the BPL. Also I guess rugby is a much more physical, aggressive game and a lot of your frustrations can be taken out on the opposite team rather than the officials.

I assume its because they make less mistakes and get less hate from the players for huge mistakes.

I don't watch anywhere near enough rugby to know but I'm assuming they don't have attitude problems, so many ref's, in particular Dowd, try and act like bad head teachers, make a decision people ask what and he tells them to f off, puts on his "i'm better than you" look, the I don't have to explain myself to you actions. That attitude is accepted by the players, and so the players treat him like an a-hole, quite rightly. The ref is there, being paid to keep the game fair by calling decisions correctly, he's not a head teacher, they aren't kids.

A LOT of football ref's don't want to be part of the game, they want to control it, they want to be the big man, and it shows.

Ref's that talk to the players properly about decisions and you can see the players are calmer. Then you've got the ref's, again Dowd, amongst others, who make a big show and tell about calling players over say when two players are shoving each other at a corner.

You really don't get that in most other sports, NFL, they guys don't show attitude and get in players faces, its pretty much only football.

Give a player a warning, then each time afterwards when there is a bookable offence commited bin him for 5 mins.
Keep red cards for serious incidents.

Yeah I always think this would be a good idea, simple is best - 10 mins in the sin bin for a yellow, second yellow off.

Refs in rugby get more respect for a few reasons, one is that they have the 10m rule for dissent, and in rugby the 10m is far more important than moving a free kick 10m forward in football. Also from a young age the refs seem to have a far stricter approach to dissent in rugby. And finally, there are far more *&^%s playing football than rugby.

Personally I have been banging on about any player that goes down fir more than 15-30 seconds rolling round has to come off for 5 minute for "treatment" if they stay down long enough they must be "injured" so off they come.

Guaranteed to stop diving after a week or two because managers would go ballistic at their own players for diving and putting them a man down. Slightly off topic but ho hum :D

Some of the players in rugby league do have attitudes but only the team captains are allowed to speak to the ref unless he calls over a player. Speak out of turn and the ref will tell the captain to sort his players out.... if it carries on they go in the bin.

Personally I think the sinbin is a great idea but it would ruin football.

Another good thing about rugby is the ref's ability to put incidents "on report" where they are looked at by a panel after the game, kind of like in F1.

Fines and bans can be impossed this way and this would certainly make a difference in football.
