About 14 months ago I had a couple of interviews with a large well known technology company.

Ended up with them saying they liked me but couldn't hire me for some reason, and that they'd keep my details on file etc if something came up. Like most I was skeptical about this and thought yeah ok I'm never hearing from you again. Thought it was maybe a nice way of them saying I wasn't quite ready for that step up in role yet.

Was pretty gutted as it was a job that was really where I wanted to be career wise, and a lot earlier than I could have expected.

Fast forward to end of Feb this year and I get an email out the blue from the manger that interviewed me asking what I was up to and was I still interested in a role at their company.

5 minute phone call just going over what I'd been up to the last year or so and what I wanted package wise and they said sounds good offer will be on it's way soon!

I started there a couple of weeks ago and so happy for it, can't believe my luck.

As for why they did that than go through the whole hiring process from fresh, I believe it was down to timings really.

I was obviously still in the system at a point in the process where an offer could be made, starting the hiring process from scratch would mean a whole lot of time getting applications, doing the 2 interviews required etc etc.

I was a quick option, not that I'm complaining

Creative job... Don't wear a suit. Shirt and jeans or similar would be good. You're not being employed for your ability to conform!

It's a developer role, I was thinking dark navy chinos/trousers, dress shoes and a blue/white shirt? No tie.

IMO: Wear a smart shirt and smart casual trousers (chinos isn't a bad suggestion) and some decent shoes.

Covering letter seems fine in general but I didn't like this bit:

Should be "position's" but even then it doesn't read very well, you could remove it altogether I think. Seems you landed an interview so a moot point in this instance but if you use the letter as a template then I'd take it out

Good to hear some people are hearing back after being kept on file. I'm due some feedback next week from a (failed) interview this week that I thought had gone fairly well... but clearly not that well

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has ever landed a job (in the past 10 years) from a CV being 'kept on file' and then being pro-actively contacted by the employer. In the days of snail mail that maybe came in to play but I suspect in the modern age the majority of hiring is done from a clean slate.

I think the closet I ever had was an agency contacting me nearly a year later wanting to put me forward again to a company they'd previously got me an interview at.

I applied for a job with Orange back in 2005. Didn't get past interview stage.

I was then called by them 2 years ago and asked to apply for a job after they still had my CV.

That's the issue, I wanted slightly more so I'll get a call back with a counter offer hopefully.

Don't be afraid to push. In my experience, 'slightly' more is rarely a deal breaker. Anyway, you know what you're doing so ignore me

I contemplated it for quite some time. It's ultimately a creative company and they stated quite clearly it was a casual interview so I wasn't too concerned about wearing a suit. It was a first but I don't regret the decision

I've been meaning to get the tablet out for a couple of weeks, I'm off this evening so I'll get something doodled out Excellent work in the showcase thread, though. I do follow!
