Should I be Teaching my 13 year old to drive....?

Find a quiet industrial estate on a sunday and somebody will have a unit with a carpark thats technically private land and nice and empty.

I think its a great idea.

:)

I'll be taking her out this weekend.

Incidentally, I'm just down the road from you tonight mate - Wakefield 41, parked opposite the ambulance station - but I don't think this is the sort of estate I want...:D

Don't see there's any issue with introducing them to the basic concept of driving early on.

If you have access to somewhere private where legal issues aren't present then let her try it, she'll either love it and want more or get bored and want to go back to being driven about by her chauffeur.

I sit my 3 year old son on my knee and let him 'help' me park the car up on the drive. He hasn't got much of a clue what he's doing but he loves it and tells everyone he's been driving. He also complains when other cars don't indicate and encourages me to 'go faster daddy'.

I think he'll be wanting to go driving way before he's 17, and I'll gladly oblige.

Definately not the 41

the West Yorkshire Police Car Servicing depot is round the back of morrisons and the West Yorkshire Police Helicopter HQ is just on the left as you drive from the 41 to the M1. So the roads round the estate are swimming with cops / traffic cops on their way to one of the above 2 locations.

Definately NOT the place to do a bit of slightly illegal driving with your daughter :D

I know mate - I live in Stoke, so I won't be taking her to Yorkshire for a lesson... lol

She's been doing this for years!

Its an auto so all she has to do is steer if I put it in drive.

Pretty much my thinking. :)

I learned to drive at the age of 11 on a family friends farm, was great fun at that age, drove for years off road and on private roads.
At the age of 17 I decided I wanted a motorbike and didn't get round to taking my car test till 23 lol.

Not sure where you're based - you mentioned Wakefield? - but there's an off road course you can take 14 year olds on at tockwith, near York. Costs £15 for 90 mins using your own car. My dad took me there when I was 15 and I'll be taking my kids in a couple of years. They have proper road layouts with roundabouts etc

That place looks a good idea.

I live in Stoke-on-Trent, but am parked for the night in Wakefield in my truck...

It does look good, no similar places in Stoke unfortunately.

I learnt to drive my dads old discovery when I was about 10 on the farm and a year or too later he bought me a scrappy old fiesta 1.1 popular to rag about in. Amazing fun.

Still didn't stop me failing my test 3 times though!

It seems a decent idea to me, as long as you're somewhere relatively safe and secure from the public then it's unlikely to be a problem. My dad used to let me drive the car around local farm roads from the age of 12/13 to get used to it and practice hill starts on a couple of slopes with loose gravel about there - certainly gives you an idea about clutch control.

My dad used to let me drive the truck in empty car parks when I was 12-14. Was awesome!

Used to let me drive the car round the street sometimes, wish I could do the same for my kids when am older. Doubt it will be the same by then though!

Don't get her started on an automatic. Try any racing circuit, Brands Hatch near me have special courses for youngsters using real cars, real teachers and real environment.

Then get her go-karting.

Andi.
