hi guys

my budget is around £180 for new hard drive. i like the look of 300GB velociraptor, the only problem with SSD is their capacity. cheapest 256GB SSD cost £470 lol

how long do you think 256GB SSD price drop to around £180? if long time then i'll get the velociraptor 300GB

cheers

Why not just get a 64GB SSD for OS and then a large fast SATA for other apps/storage?

I went from a 300GB Velociraptor > 64GB Samsung SSD and a 1TB HDD and I wouldn't go back

already got M255 64GB in another machine, simply too small for me and it's not exactly fast as people making out. i am thinking of selling very soon

I would say not 2010 that is for sure.

It really depends on how much money you have, but if I had a choice I would go for a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB over a Raptor.

They are not really that much slower from benchmarks that I have saw, but with the F3 it will run much! cooler, and you are getting larger size and it will be cheaper too.

Possible even if for gaming you could get two and Raid0 them for the same price as the Raptor.

If you feel disappointed with the speed of the SSD, then I personally feel you will not notice much of a difference between the F3 and Raptor.

i cant see prices tumbling this year.

i recommend Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB for your os and programs and then any random 1TB drive for your data. thats what i did and my system runs like a bullet, 80GB is a fair size disk when you take your 'my docs' folder out of the equation

Have to agree with the above. I replaced a 300GB VR with an Intel 80GB SSD as the boot drive and couldn't go back. The VR does little but act now as a paging volume, Photoshop scratch disk and somewhere to throw temporary files.

I second the recommendations above about grabbing a 1 TB storage drive to compliment the SSD. The F3 or Caviar Black are good choices.

If money is an issue though, the VR does make an excellent OS drive. SSD is better but I think either solution is a good one.

i'm using raptor 74GB in my main rig, which is MUCH faster than 500GB seagate 7200.11. M255 64GB SSD is only a little faster than the raptor. hence in my view, i'd rather to have large fast single disk like this 300GB velcioraptor.

thanks

Something is wrong with your 64GB M225 then because it should blow any mechanical drive out of the water. What firmware is that M225 running?

not sure, how can i find out?

my issue is i use vmware a lot and running multi vm machines, 74GB raptor and M255 64GB SSD simply too small. if i place vm machine files in 500GB seagate, i noticed massively performance drop.

I think people have the wrong mind set when it comes to SSD... youu buy them for speed, not capacity...

I personally dont see need for anything bigger than a 128gb SSD, even a 64gb is more than adequate for the OS and core apps... you wouldnt want to use space on an ssd to store stuff...

I had a 128gh m225 and sold it after a week... I dint feel normal pc usage justified such an expense, for minimal gain.. unless you are encoding or working with large files etc, SSDs are simply not worth it.... at cureent prices... I dont want to see their capacity fo up, but rather their prices come down....

I opted for 2x 500gb F3 in Radi0 for £70 instead.. and am more than happy...

I use a 40GB Intel SSD for OS and 300 GB VRaptor for Apps and Data, I couldn't be happier. I have certainly seen a big improvement in performance over a single Raptor.
