Should I buy a new car?

You didnt do that at 30 mate.

Ive done it twice at 60, no air bags gone off, an the wheel hasnt even cracked, just ground alloy off on the kurb.

Also been in a car accident where brakes failed and we hit a roundabout at 70 an the wheel cracked an wasnt as damaged at that.

3 air bags off, cracked wheel i doubt it mate but if it makes you feel better.

Also noticed, theres deffinatly a bent wishbone or snapped trackrod there. Ain't happening at 30, an if you tell me this is wrong. Then BMW build quility must be lower then Vauxhall as ive hit a kurb around 30 an it knocked the tracking out... An i drive Vauxhalls.

Because all crashes are the same aren't they, the angles were the same, the kerb heights the same, the momentum due to the weight the same, the tyre profiles the same, the wheel construction the same...

That's not 30mph bud. Having family in Accident Repair garage, and a step-dad for Mechanic. Easy to see this is a load of bull. That's my 2p

And my 2p is that my GF's 206 came off worse in a ~30MPH shunt into a kerb, pushing the wheel and suspension back far enough that it made the drivers door not open properly, shattered the wheel, and caused major damage to the suspension components.

I love the three pages of posters who are clearly car safety experts, accident investigators and people with extensive experience of crashing an E46 BMW.

Those who are none of the above, how can you possibly call him a liar when you haven't a clue about the subject in hand.

More then likely a bent wishbone you mean.

Blah blah blah

Where do these idiots come from? This guy seems to know all the variables and they were all the same as another crash he's got experience of. No point in an accident assessor taking a look, nyzrox has all the answers.

An [sic] he drives Vauxhalls! Get him!!

I've hit a kerb at <10mph and did 1600 quids worth of suspension damage  Depending on the angle of impact and kerb, hitting one at 30mph could easily do that.

My uncle's a surgeon - pass me the knife and I'll finish your lobotomy for free!

Wait, am I not qualified to do that because I have a family in the medical profession? Damn! :p

Anyway, so you're touting what.. 70 mph? How would I possibly have NOT gone up the kerb at 70? There's concrete posts a few feet from the kerb. If I had hit the kerb at 70 I'd have piled in to those posts and the car would be smashed to pieces. It isn't. The car with three people in weighed approximately 1650 kg, and at 30 mph that's a lot of force for an 18" wheel to take. Bear in mind it hasn't exploded, just a chunk has been taken out of the part that hit the kerb.

Also bear in mind that your Vauxhall's probably had 2 pence suspension made of cast iron - heavy. My BMW has a delicate aluminium suspension set up that will likely not tolerate as much impact as the one on a P reg Vauxhall Astra would.

My car has been designed to have good performance and be safe, with a much larger budget than Vauxhall have on any of the cars they build. BMW haven't built the car to not deform in accidents, in fact quite the opposite. That wheel cracking and suspension bending has absorbed some energy that would have otherwise been directed through me!

+ mounting points in the subframe, and ARB droplinks, and bushes, and ...

For someone with an indepth knowledge of car accidents you don't really seem to know a lot about this one, did you not get the report through?

nyrox, please, stop being an idiot.

I hit a curb at 20 and did no damage at all, other than damaging the tyre, but that was a low and sloped curb, does that mean the OP is a liar? No.

I've snapped a droplink by brushing a curb at 10mph.

I once hit a small rock in the road (in a mk4 escort) and just bent a track rod/end.

My point is, every accident is different depending on the car, road conditions, the curb its self, the drivers reactions and a million of other factors.

Do you work for your family business? Who are they?

Im a Laptop Engineer mate.

Seems bizarre to me.

Oh an its a 03 plate bud =)

So what qualifications do you have in assessing damage caused in accident, also wtf is a laptop engineer? do you put the ram in on the production line?

PMKeates anymore updates with regards to what actually happened and your friends burns etc?

Yes.

On another note, my car was collected by the insurance company this morning, and I'm told the assessment will be complete by tomorrow or Thursday.

If it's going to be repaired I'll put it on a truck and move it to BMW!
