Should I buy a Phenom just to help AMD out?

Agree with above - buy whatever suits your needs and budget best. Whichever way you go with amd / intel there will be small differences, just find a budget and buy whichever one ticks the most boxes.

I bought a hex for willy waving haha. Seriously though for what I use my PC for I believe a hex suits me more and Bang for buck I went for AMD over Intel.

Off topic: Hex for Hex is rather fitting :)
