It's an R Reg (98) 2.0LX

I've just got the one key which seems to activate a flashing LED next to the clock but does that mean that it's got an alarm? Am I supposed to have a remote central locking beeper thingy as well?

you will deffo have an alarm and deadlocks (when you close the door unlock it and then lock it and you should hear it lock twice) but i dont know if you should have remote locking :)

Flashing LED is probably to say the immobilizer is enabled. Doesn't necessarily mean it has an alarm.
Break a window and see if it goes off!
Alternatively, leave the rear window open, lock the car once (so its not deadlocked), leave it 30 seconds or so and then reach in to open the door from the inside. If it does have an alarm then its likely to be triggered by either movement inside the car, or a door opening.

This is a trick I found out at random when I had my mondeo.

Try turning the key to the left, then to the right. My mondeo just to make 4 little beeps after doing this to tell me that the alarm was armed, and it did indeed have an alarm!

Took me 12 months to figure that out!

Open the bonnet, on the right hand side is a black plunger looking thing?

Front of the car on top of the front beam above drivers side headlight.

Press it 8 times. That should make the car beep.

If it does then I am 99% sure you have an alarm.

This works with any of the door close switches, so might just be easier to use the drivers door. Push it in and out loads until it beeps at you (8 times is prob right). This puts it in diag mode. It will then beep at you every time you open and close a door/bonet etc which allows you to check all the switches work.

As Tesla says, I'm fairly sure this diag mode only works if you have an alarm.

To cancel the diag mode just start the ignition.

Or just wait about 30secs. You are right with the doors though.

I imagine one of the switches is faulty which is why the alarm is not working, the car probably thinks a door is open all of the time!

Make sure you test the 4 doors, boot and bonnet to determine the fault.

If you want a hand changing sensors or anything let me know :)

Done that, the horn makes a few beeps so I guess I have an alarm. Should I have a remote keyfob then?

Wind the windows down. Lock the car (Not double-lock).

Open the door by the interior handle and see if the alarm goes off.

you can buy the remotes from the bay and take it to your ford dealer and get it chipped for your car.

if your boot has a mocroswitch entry (which i doubt it will for your cars age) then the 3 button remote, if not, then the 2 button one.

3 button remotes with remote boot opening came into being in approx December 1998.
