Should the Tories adopt American Spelling now?

People can use whatever spelling of a word that they please, it's not decided by the conservatives.

Well, one that vaguely resembles the word they are trying to say helps....:p

And it does seem a bit strange that the OP thinks it's more reasonable for a government to change a part of the language of it's own country rather than the individual change an option in a browser, because he can't be 'assed'....

To the best of my knowledge the UK doesn't have an actual language policy. The government reviews the National Curriculum, but they don't strictly control language itself. That goes for "The Tories" or any other elected party really.

Easy to fix if it actually occurs to you, which most of the time it doesn't for me.

Your lucky my English is even half way correct given I managed to miss out on most of English teaching at Junior school level :S

EDIT: On which note was down to the Tories meddling with the curriculum and using my school as one of the places to trial it.

My brother is dyslexic and colour blind. Back in the 70s there wasn't as much appreciation for these as a learning inhibitor. Instead of extra help he was simply put in the bottom class for everything and assumed to be stupid. As a result he left school with just about no qualifications. But he still manages to spell correctly now. Because, as an adult, he appreciates the importance of it in his professional life (and it has helped him build a career earning around 200k a year). Poor spelling and grammar is a choice.

As Mrs Thatcher once said; "No, no, no, no, no".

I would support moves towards switching to the Asian style big-endian date format, especially if we could get silly Americans to ditch their stupid middle-endian format.

It is called English for a reason. It isn't called American. They have no concept of good grammar, can't use the letter u, substitute z for s and don't even realise that aluminium contains the second letter i. If anything they should learn the language correctly :D

No.

Its English. Not Americanish.

No nation that inexplicably decides to ignore the 'h' at the front of 'herbs' should be allowed to have any say in other nations languages.

We should be pushing for America to pass a bill forcing them all to use proper English!

We are quite arrogant at times, especially over our language

The American system is better, sorry, it just is....like the whole floor debate we had a few months ago

dons my Union Flag Tie, puts Royal Britannia CD on and sticks head in sand :D

p.s. sometimes, because I'm a right prat, I actually say Knife rather than nife....hey, makes me chuckle

English as a whole is probably one of the worst for spelling vs pronunciation. A lot of other languages are almost phonetic in their spelling which is nice when you're learning.

That being said, I do prefer some of the "Americanized" spelling reform but I'm not sure about making it a legal requirement over here.

As long as people don't start using "burglarize" instead if the far more sensible "burgle" I'm happy.

Oh and the way they pronounce 'baton', it is a BAT-TUN not a BA-TAAAWWN
