I've no idea what your replies have to do with the question Acme :p

Other cars have sticks too but they are digital which allows for things like auto park mode when ignition off, smaller shifters or in the case or some cars no shifter at all etc.

This isn't new tech either, Jag had it 8 years ago so it seems odd Audi have not gone that way.

I thought you meant why is there a physical stick, not why does the physical stick require mechanical movement. :o

But even then, it isn't unusual to have a stick which you have to move rather than toggle. Porche's shifter requires movement too... No? :(

We're not disputing that. We're comparing that happens when it is moved i.e. is it mechanically moving something or just changing the state of a switch.

We are talking about shifters with an electronic rather than physical connection to the box, allowing auto park etc as a result.

I think all that this has confirmed is that the good old manual gearbox is in fact the simplest and most ideal gearbox and does not cause people to argue over what bit is connected to what.

Best gearbox.

I just know loltim agrees with me on this.

While stuck in traffic this morning, I thought, for the first time in my life, that I wouldn't mind a car with a good auto or semi-auto box. Previously I have been a stick-shift Nazi.

You know there are manual cars with clutches that do not give your left leg a gym session right? :p
