I'm seriously looking in to doing a course in this as I need a career change, if you could call what I do a career :p Oh and the possibility to lead to a fulltime job.

So anyway has anyone on here done this course?

Or perhaps give me an insight in to whats required or what any exams are like? And any other things that are covered when it's being taught.

What are the fees likely to be?

Cheers

Website is here.

Lots of info on there.

Which course you take is dependent on what you want to do, although be warned that most security jobs are very low paid.

I did the PSS (public space surveilance) course, not because I had to but because I wanted to know what initial training my staff had before they came and worked for me.

No idea on the cost as my contractor paid for it (was already running the course for other people so it was no extra to put me on it), however after the course then the licence itself is ~£250 and has to be renewed every three years.

Each course covers the elements needed to be licenced in each particular strain. So PSS is all about data protection, CCTV operation and basic control room operations. I know that the Door Supervision and Security Guard courses cover things like engagement and situation management along with conflict management, however they're not full training in these aspects, just the bare minimum.

As for the exams at the end of the courses (courses are usually 4 days), they're not particularly challenging :)

Good luck if you do choose to move into the security field!

I do have an eye for detail and observe every last thing around me. So maybe I'd be good at it :p

I think I'll nip in to a training centre that deals with all things related SIA and whatnot.

I just think I'd like to man the security rooms in any workplace, or even a retail store.

Infact I know some right boners that are looking in to doing this course but are doleys...I doubt I'd get much sense from them :p

I did the SIA door supervisors course and quite frankly found it to be a bit of a joke, easy as chips and even our instructor pretty much said that a monkey could pass it. Did it all privately so course cost me £200+ (was one of those intensive ones so twice the price of college 6 week ones) and license was under £250 I think. From what I been told though because I done it at a certain time I would also be entitled to doing normal security work too.

As for doleys we had around 8 people in the class and half of them were doing it for free through one scheme or another, so don't expect intelligent discussions in the coffee room.

If you want a career change why not do exactly that, and start a career? Being a bouncer isn't a career, its a job.

:p

I guess I need University to help me start a career change lol.

Not after being a doorman/bouncer, I'm not big or strong enough :p

More workplace based I say.

Well you could always go with PSS and then increase your employability with some higher level courses. These guys are pretty good and recommended across the industry.

However, it'd be advisable to get into the field first, work your way up and get the company to pay for your training :p
