Sikhs allowed to wear ceremonial dagger to school

one set of rules for everyone, start bringing into force even MORE differences and you will get a further divide between people and resentment that they get special treatment, (Im aware its not all the special but still)

whats to stop you saying you are a sikh and just carrying one, whats the defenition of 'being' a sikh surely if you say you are a sikh you are one? just in the same way you can be christian or a jedi?

also knives are banned for a reason, even if its not used by the owner there is nothing to stop a bully or whatever taking the knife and using it on the owner or someone else

There's practising Sikh's and non practising Sikhs/ Sikhs who only go to the temple on special occassions. I'm the latter. Only practising Sikhs, with the whole turban, uncut hair etc, wear the dagger.

I understand that but does the legistlation specify that you have to be a practising sikh to be allowed to wear one in school? and how can they prove it?

Ignore the "blunt, sheathed" aspect, why? Because it is TOTALLY irrelevant.

Can I as a non-religious student wear a toy dagger and not be told to "get that off or have it confiscated"? No.

We had everything considered non-school relevant under the sun confiscated from us during school. Laser pointers, toys, other misc fluff.

Send them back

Christians scoot around with crosses around their necks, Muslims wear garbs and headscarves, while Sikhs get to reek of awesomeness and win with their gigantic knives.

S'all fair if ye ask me.

thats not a knife!

That I don't know. Usually if a Sikh is not practising then he/she doesn't wear the articles of faith. Of course it may not stop some people from looking for a loophole or pretending to be a Sikh to wear the dagger.

you wouldnt get very far trying to stab someone with a little jesus cross, and I cant imagine being mugged by someone brandashing a length of cloth with intent.

1) Violent people will be violent so giving them a sharp pencil is a risk. If people are peaceful then they won't use these daggers as weapons

Pretty much sums up my opinion, although someone's much more likely to be killed by a dagger than a pencil when the school psycho does decide to rage. Then again, I highly doubt these daggers are going to be 8" sharpened blades.

So why not let anyone carry on who wants to carry one?

The kirpan has its origins as a weapon but this dates back hundreds of years to wars involving Sikhs. Now it is worn as a symbol of the faith and only really used to bless food during religious occasions. Attacks using kirpans are extremely rare but having said that, my opinion is that kirpans worn outside should be made so that the blade is permanently locked in the sheath. They should never be used as a weapon or to threaten.
