Driving around I see no end of cars with numberplates that are clearly European as the font is thinner with the letters/numbers 'pressed' in. Also I see UK Vauxhalls with Opel badges on the back.

People have been doing it for a while but recently there seem to be more, especially with the numberplates (VW mk4 Golf seems to be a popular choice).

Am I missing something here - I just don't understand why .

We'll I'm guilty of badging my car as a HSV. The amount of times I've seen people walking up to it to take pictures asking their mate what it was only to hear 'oh its a Vauxhall'.

Well no but when they see this big monster of a car and then see it's a Vauxhall, just like their next door neighbours Corsa or Astra, that no doubt takes the shine off for anyone who doesn't know what it really is, then it's just a big Vauxhall.

Anyone who dosent know what a Monaro is isnt going to know that Vauxhall isnt very highly regarded as a creditable car manufacturer.

Of course they are. Most members of the public think its some sort of exotic sports car with its big red shiny body, 4 chrome tail pipes, big wheels and brakes and bonnet scoops. They expect to see some badge they have never heard of. Most of the general public don't watch Top Gear so have no idea what it actually is.

Dont get me wrong, I would do the same as you, Holden just sounds cooler.

Compared to something like Ford? most people dont know the difference imo.

I think in the UK the Monaro is interesting, mainly because every other car with that sort of..engine size/power etc is either a big boring German car or a Jag.
