I'm building a new Win 7 PC and wanted to know the simplest and cheapest way of linking it with my old XP machine so that I can quickly copy the data from the XP box to the new machine.

I've heard about crossover cables -- is this the simplest/cheapest solution? Any tips on how to set one up?

Many thanks.

Cheers guys. I was hoping to do this by spending as little money as possible, but in fact getting a router might be the best option. I've managed without so far as I've always had single wired connections to my cable modem, but going forward I'll be getting more mobile -- so a wireless router would be good.

So if I get a wireless router that also has 4 cable ports, I can still use it as a wired router? And any computers connected can be 'seen' by each other? I'm new to all this, so thanks for indulging an out of date duffer! ;)

if you were plugged directly into the cable modem i hope you kept your system patched, used decent passwords, and had a very paranoid software firewall installed! did you not get a free wireless router with your cable connection? i got a netgear one thrown in for free, and whilst it's not the best thing in the world - it's certainly better than nowt.
