Im pretty skinny and doing weights. Because I am that thin just after starting up again I can see my muscles popping through my thin frame.

Is protein what I need to bulk up? as well as food of course.

Nobody 'Needs' Whey protein but it's an excellent supplement to help get a certain amount of protein into your body.

Make sure you have a good routine, a good diet and then go from there.

I'm in the same boat. I've been going to the gym for the past 3 months and have noticed some gains (for a beginner) that I'm pleased with.

All I have been using is the weight machines rather than free weights. I now want to use the free weights but everyone that side of the gym is massive and I'll look a bit stupid when billy no muscles strolls in trying to mix it with the big boys having never done any free weights in my life :(

All the big boys were once little boys too remember :p

Just dive in, we've all been their, after a few times you'll get used to it. No-one looks down on you for being small (well a few people but theyr opinion doesn't count for anything).

+ you'll always be small if you keep using the machines ;)

I bought my own cheap bench and lots of weights. Probably £120 in total. I too couldn't face the big boys at the gym. I am not a fan of other peoples sweat either lol.

Of course you can get big training at home. It depends entirely on the equipment, knowledge and weight at your disposal.

I'm not sure bolger meant his post quite seriously.

I believe he's just trying to get accross the point that free weights are infinately better than machines.

Don't ever be afraid of mixing it up with the big boys in the gym. Be friendly and if you need advice ask for it, and I'm quite sure you'll find some of them to be very friendly back and willing to help. You'll always get the ass of the gym, but ignorance is bliss.

I'll pick some routines out and see what they feel like and if I'm comfortable doing them.

I saw someone using some, what looked like washing up sponges in his hands, whilst doing some EZbar bicep curls.

Madness.

I was in the same boat il explain how i am slowly getting out of it.

1 probable factor is im nearly 25, and my motablism isnt as fast.
I bought a bench and 60kg of free weights.
I train everyday, 1 day back 1 day front, with a friend (uni house) 3 rounds or max 10 reps. (it may not be perfect but i find it comfortable, and have been upping the weights regularly, id say i bench 6kg more now per arm that i did when i started.)
I eat breakfast, normal lunch, and large dinner, but i also drink a large carb/protein mix equivelant to another meal, after each meal. (drink fairly heavily too)

Progress so far in 2 month is a stone, and noticeable upper body gain.
6ft2 12 stone and gaining.
Because i was skinny, i have a low body fat ratio, probably an unhealthy one, but i sure look toned.

Definately an awful routine there. Get that sorted and you will see some better gains and will grow in a symetrical and more desirable way.

And the post above hits the nail on the head. People, You MUST train your legs.

I presume you've got a barbell with the bench?

Bent over rows, deadlifts, t bar rows,

All these will work your back.

Yeah i expected to hear that, usual stuff, but i can assure you i find this a whole lot better to fit into the time i have, and its working so might as well stick with what works. Im very happy with the shape and progress, faster than when i was at a gym.
Legs are being added, when i buy an olympic set next week.

Fair play mate I can't force you to take advice, if you feel it's working then there's nothing I can offer.

Just remember, if you ever have problems or need advice you're always welcome to ask here.

Happy Training.

:) Get stuck in and mix it up with the free weights - dont think about other people just concentrate on what you want to achieve. Im sure you pay just the same as everyone else, so you are entitled to use them!
Yep as mentioned above - train you legs hard!
Eat lots of quality food if you want to see some gains
Whey protein wont harm you as long as your working out
If your unsure of anything at the gym, just ask someone (usually you find out that they also think they know everything about weights & training and will generally go off on one lol)
If you cant do that - then just watch someone else do it first :)
