Sky Q - carrying over existing discount

I spoke to Sky this morning with the intention of upgrading to Sky Q as now aware that existing offers carry over. My current discount runs out March next year so with a new 12 month contract i'd be looking at 6 months at full price.

I didn't go for it as whilst the offer is okay I thought why not cancel my current deal (i'm not under contract), wait for a 50% offer during the cancellation period, then carry this discount over when I upgrade to Q?

That way I don't end up paying full price and negotiate the best possible deal when my contract runs out after 12 months.

Obviously there is no guarantee I will get an offer during the cancellation period but from past experience this is very likely. Do you think it will work?

Why should they offer a discount? They're under no obligation to? If you want Sky Q, a premium product, then pay for it at the price it is?
 
I'm prepared to pay the "premium" of £12pm for Q but not an extra £45pm for 6 months if I lose my discount. Entirely my choice of course and I certainly don't feel entitled to anything.

I suspect there will be better deals for existing customers in 6 months and therefore prepared to wait if needs be. In the meantime will do my best to get another 50% deal for 12 months ;-)
 
So is the price shown on the sky website how much you pay for the whole contract. I'm currently paying 28 a month for HD which expires in December, however the site shows that q is just 40 a month.

I believe the £12pm difference is the cost of Sky Q, therefore I presume you don't have a discount currently? For me I currently pay £38.75pm for HD Box Sets with Sky Sports but this increases to £83pm for Q as would lose my current 50% discount.

To keep the discount until the end of my discount period I needed to ring the Q upgrade team.
 
Why should they offer a discount? They're under no obligation to? If you want Sky Q, a premium product, then pay for it at the price it is?

For someone who wants it, it is just delaying the inevitable. Why not just take the extra cash and get the product out to the customer earlier.

I get a discount (normal price 38 so 25%) which drops me to £28 a month, clicking on upgrade to q says it would cost me £40 a month but says thats as new monthly cost and a new 12 month contract which i assume keeps the same price for a year.

Okay it sounds like the website is carrying the discount over (initially anyway) but would ring them and clarify to be sure. I'm now in my cancellation period so can't check on my own a/c to see what happens if I upgrade to Q online.
 
Just a quick update - I logged in to my account this evening and already have a 50% offer available. I'll be on live chat in the morning to see if they can improve on this before signing up.

I'll then speak to the Q upgrades team to carry the new discount across for 12 months.....hopefully! Apparently the current offer on £60 installation etc runs out next week.

Okay folks my last post on this one. Spoke to retentions this morning who offered 60% discount for 12 months with no contract. I accepted and when logging back in to my Sky account it already shows the updated cost, so I've also now upgraded to Q online.

So just to summarise I had a 50% discount until March next year, I rung and cancelled on Sunday, rejoined today with a 60% 12 month deal and have now upgraded to Q with total monthly cost of £44.

This is the full package, box sets with sports and movies plus the additional HD pack. One off costs only £60.

So for any existing customers holding off as won't get discount for 12 months - you may want to consider this approach (no guarantees obviously).

We're out of contract in a couple of weeks. Whats the best way to start the ball rolling, phone up and just say you want to leave and then wait for the 50% discount offer? Also what is the deal about not having a contract??

Yes that's all I did, when I phoned initially they offered 30% off for 5 years or something like that. I was actually up front with them and explained I wanted Q but didn't want to pay full price for 6 months.

You can't really lose because if you don't get a good offer during the cancellation period you can just cancel the cancellation if that makes sense. The 60% discount off existing package was with no contract so could cancel at anytime. Q has 12 month contract though so doesn't really matter if upgrading.

I rung retentions to get the new discount off my existing package, once it was showing under my account (about 10 mins), I rung Q upgrades to place my order. Tried to get them to waive the installation fee but they weren't having it :p
 
What ightly bugs me about sky q is that your renting the equipment. Once these offers rung out won't sky have a lot if people be returning them? As the full price us crazy high.

Potentially yes. That's why I didn't want my discount running out half way through my contract as no incentive for sky to offer me a good deal at that time (why would they?). At least now I have the best possible chance of securing another large discount in 12 months when contract runs out.

I certainly don't think I should be entitled to anything but as with many businesses, if they wish to keep my custom, why not offer a deal?
They are more than capable as we all know... It's just the song and dance that comes with it.
 
interesting post thanks for the information i'm in the process of returning to sky after cancelling last july.

i got the 60% off and 75 pounds credit on your bill offer by post so signed up yesterday. It does say i have to wait upto 3 days to be reconnected. Once my account is active i'll look into Sky Q thanks again for the post and going into so much detail.
