SKY+ remote control question

Not sure if this is the right place to post this query, please move if needed Mr Moderators....

My father in law has brought a new remote control for his Sky+ box, it is a SKY+ remote control, the "proper one" as he called it.

I programmed it to operate his TOshiba LCD easily enough and that works fine.

The problem he is having is a slow response from the sky box or no response at all, my questions are:

Do you need to program the remote to operate the Sky+ box?

If yes to the above, could you point me in the direction of how to do it?

Should it work straight out of the box?

I have been to the Sky website and could not find what I was looking for.

If its a direct replacement for a Sky+ remote then no it should all just *work*

The slowness, i've never heard of it happening because of a new remote, quite the opposite in fact - the new remotes on the old Pace boxes work much much faster - certainly made a difference to us.

Is it a *new* remote or a second hand one?

No I have not and I will try that first!!

Just power off the mains? and back on again?

Had another go at it and decided it was a fault with the box, my father in law contacted Sky and explained the symptons..... they think it is a faulty sensor, someone is swapping it out next week.
