Hi,
A few weeks ago, our house got burgled on an afternoon while we were out. The burglar(s) broke in through a window (on the ground floor) and stole some cctv equipment and cash.
We hadn't left the window open, but unfortunately, we'd left it slightly ajar, but locked on the catch, so it needed to be forced to get it open. We've actually had the window like this for a while, as there are cctv cables that run through it, hence the reason we couldn't close it completely.
We now know how easy it was to get the window open, as the burglar(s) did it without damaging it. We've since tried it ourselves and it's pretty easy. Once the burglar(s) got in they stole the things and left through the patio door (which was locked, but the key wasn't hidden).
We admit that we've been very stupid for leaving the window the way it was and for not hiding a key to an inside door, but we just became complacent I guess, (we haven't ever been broken into before).
The odd thing is that the burglary was very clean and tidy. It was pouring down with rain that day and there was not one mark anywhere on the window (we would've expected a footprint on the windowsill at least). No clothes were pulled out of the drawers, but a lot of the drawers were taken out and placed on the floor. Apart from this, there was no mess or damage whatsoever. Whoever it was, they were very respectful of our property (if you can call it that).
The only fingerprints that were left around the house actually belonged to us and none of the neighbours saw anything, so the police have nothing to go on.
Unfortunately for us, because of the lack of chaos that the burglar(s) caused around the house, the police have become suspicious and now think that the burglary was committed by one of us (there are three of us living in the house). We admit that it does look very suspicious, but without the cctv equipment, we have no way of proving that it wasn't us.
My thoughts were, that each burglar has their own methods or their own 'stamp' and they may have carried out the same sort of burglary once or twice before. I reckon that if this had happened in our area, then the police would recognise the 'stamp' and realise that it wasn't one of us. If it was done outside of our area, I don't know whether the different police forces would share information on petty crimes.
I just wondered if anyone knew of a similar burglary lately?
Please let me know.
