Slow Down Move Over Campaign

I'll get flamed, but I don't care. I'm against this rule, you shouldn't be in the hard shoulder doing anything like changing tyres unless its safe to do so. Slowing down, forcing people to move over is going to cause even more accidents. If emergency crews are present at the scene then its down to them to control the situation ie close the lane etc...

The problem is people do not pay enough attention on the roads, more of these rules will not alter that.

OK how about this, I work on the roads and am regularly in and around the hardshoulder or verge on motorway or dual carriageways. It's part of my job and I can tell you that having hgv's thundering by you isn't fun on the best of day but if they moved over I know I would feel better for it.

On the flip side the worst offenders are the foreign lorry drivers (typically) who tend to use the rumble line between the H/S & lane 1 as a guide whilst they're driving...

Not flaming you at all, absolutely not but having done this for 22 years, 5 of which as an OIC I can tell you that it's not as simple as this. Far from it. ;)

We will carry out a DRA when we are first in attendance and control the situation by using our vehicles to protect both our crews and any working area and casulaties as required ( fend off position ). An "Inner Cordon" if you like. However, closing lanes and slip roads is a last resort. The police aren't keen on it for various reasons. I have on one occasion, read an over zealous traffic officer the riot act and told him in no uncertain terms to close a section of motorway off immediately, they are fairly reluctant to do so. We will filter traffic out and away from the working area by using a combination of the aforementioned "fend off" position of our vehicles, traffic cones spaced and placed in accordance with procedures ( they will extend into the left hand lane so you are going to have to move into the right hand lane anyway  ) and manual control using crew members or utilising police resources in attendance.

However, I don't see a problem with the proposal to make road users more aware of hazards on the hard shoulder and suggesting that when and where it is safe to do so that they move over to the outside lane. They can then move safely back to where they require to be once they have passed the hazard area.

Anything that goes someway to getting road users to do this and put an entire lane between themselves and my crews gets my vote. It's common sense. ;)

Common sense, just like you move over at junctions if you can so cars can easily get on the mway.

I did this the other night actually, as did a few others actually. Was rather surprising people had common sense.

Last night not so much when a HGV overtook me doing 55 indicated in a 50. As soon as he saw the cops pared up he hit the brakes!

People seem incapable of applying common sense these days, isn't it obvious that moving over is preferable when there is something happening on the hard shoulder? Oh that's right, we need a law to tell us to do that.
