small, cheap hot-hatch

How about an MX-5?

This.

Not quick by any stretch of the imagination but will proper leave a bigger smile on your face that anything else mentioned thus far.

NA Rev 3+ MK2 MR2s fall quite nicely into your budget, but are a tad bigger than other stuff that has been mentioned. Heck, if your a sadist £1,500 will get you a ropey Turbo. I doubt you'll get much quicker for the money.

That would be the 1.9 TDI SE Leon.

:D

the wifes made it her own anyway so as said i only get to have a shot when money needs spending on her. lol

did look at mx5's a while back but my mate said i would leave my wife and shack up with a gent called clive if i bought one. the idea of a mr2 is intruiging. but i want to live beyond the end of the year Mid engined RWD car heading into the winter= certain death.

although i am partial to the idea of something Jap. any thoughts civic/CRX EF perhaps? had a civic 16-16 years ago and loved it to bits would i get a decent vtec yo mobile in budget? any other jap suggestions?

Wait, you're letting the opinion of another man influence your car buying decision? That sounds a little more gay than buying a MX5 to me ;)

The Handling traits of the MR2 are a heated debate, but the consensus is that their reputation isn't well deserved as long as you live within your limits. From what I've heard once you've lost it, you've REALLY lost it!

If you're interested in the vtec (Yo!) route a Civic VTi might be something to look into. Don't let the bland and dull looks fool you, they are supposed to be quite a car!

Get a 306 gti6 i just got one and i bloody love it !

Then again i came from a fiesta 1.25 mk4
Still though thats not to say the 306 isnt brilliant, its better in every feasible way than the fiesta
Build quality,
Gadgets,
Handling,
Fun,
Power( duh)
Comfort,
Far better on the motorway,
(better motorway mpg too)
Looks imo,
Safety,
Practicallity,
In car entertainment wise,
Interior
Brakes.

And the upgrade only cost me 1700 inculding insurance and the car is newer by 1 year and has zero rust. They are hillarious value for money really, a xsara agruably more so, but wheres the value better for you , a minging car with no 6 speed box or a non minging one with a 6 speed box for a few bob more

Thing is buying a gti-6 is HARD.
Actually there is one way my fiesta was better, turning circle, but then the fiesta could turn on a 10 pence piece

309 GTi would make a great project for this price. Could pick up a nice example for that money. Maybe even Mi16 if there is one about for sale.

Had a 309 gti a few year back loved it

Thinking nap and homoesque mr2 or dare I say it a mx5 either that or some Vtec goodness
