small, cheap hot-hatch

Another vote for the 106 GTI or saxo VTS. Two friends had one each and they were fantastic for being throwable and are even more so now - cheap. Fairly easy to work on providing the electrics aren't a major problem!

The 106 and Saxo seem to be the iconic small hatchs of a few years ago!

How about a Rover 200vi or BRM? 1.8 143bhp VVC grandad mobile!
Ibiza GTi or Cupra I think there is an older one with the 1.8T VW engine?
Honda Civic VTi any of the older 1.6?

although i am partial to the idea of something Jap. any thoughts civic/CRX EF perhaps? had a civic 16-16 years ago and loved it to bits would i get a decent vtec yo mobile in budget? any other jap suggestions?

Another vote for the Almera GTI, they are really underrated cars, beyond the bland looks they have an excellent chassis, handling and lovely engines, I had a go in one once and really liked it.

Some other Japanese suggestions. Mazda 323bg GTI, Mazda 323ba zxi, mitsi colt cyborg, startlet glanza, older jap hatches like corrola gti, charade gtti etc

Something a bit left field, a fiat cinqi sporting, okay there not exactly fast, but a hoot to drive, very simple, lightweight with nimble handling and the 1.1 fire engines are really good.
