Small Diesel for £2k - £3k

VW Polo, find a high miler (my sisters just got rid of her 170k 02 Plate Polo SDI it was ok and cost her very little - about £2.5k @ 154k miles)

Urgh, SDI.

Don't go for a VW unless you only want a badge. As has been said skoda (or SEAT) will offer you the same car with a different badge for less cash (or newer for the same cash).

306 HDI or a better speced lower mileage xsara HDI... both share same chassis and generally decent cars if looked after.

dont think you will top them for that budget tbh

any other decent modern diesel will be high mileage

Well, it would'nt have been my choice I grant you that, but the fact remains, it was cheap to buy, cost nothing to run bar routine servicing, and was more than happy doing Stoke to North Yorkshire & back every day for 8 months.

The build quality was superb and it looked & drove like a 50k miler.

If I were in the market for a small diesel, I'd happily have one, I borrowed hers for a week when she was away and was impressed - when you consider I drive a 7 Series, I think that says a lot for the little VW.

And it happily cruised @ 85mph on my private airfield.......

I'm not debating the build quality, or the fact that as a whole they are a decent car.

What I am however debating is that a) you can get essentially the same car from other VAG partners so long as you aren't badge obsessed, and you WILL get a better deal, no debating, it WILL be better VFM. b) The SDI engine is crud, simple. A TDi sure, that would be worth owning, but an SDI, no, just forget it.

Yaris 1.4 D-4D? Be quite high milage, but it's a diseasel so should last for aaaaages.
