Hi all.

I currently have a Zotac Zbox AD02, it does everything I need apart from run Netflix HD and Sky Go in high quality. Despite there being a more than capable GPU there, a combination of poor coding on MS' side (Silverlight can only acceleration h.264) and poor codec selection on Netflix's side (VC-1) this is never likely to be resolved. If you want more info, have a look here

So this leaves me with a problem.. what do I replace my AD02 with.

My requirements are that has HDMI out, SPDIF, Silent (or as near as possible), quick and painless wake from S3 via IR (USB connected IR), decent enough to CPU to handle decoding VC-1 without any help from the GPU, needs to be VESA mountable. It'll run Windows 7, be connected via ethernet to my file server and will have XBMC on there.

I'm thinking;
  • M350 mini ITX case
  • Something Z77 based, like the Zotac Z77ITX-A-E
  • Cheapest IB CPU I can get away with
  • Whatever SSD I can get for around £60
  • 8GB DDR3

Something that the Z77 based boards will over of what I currently have is the PCI-E slot - This'll allow me to add an HD tuner to the box at a later date - which is something I considered with the AD02 but it would've only been possible via USB.

WRT the CPU. Do I aim for lower TDP, or HD4000 over HD2500. I'm thinking HD4000 so that there's a better GPU there if anything does want to make use of it.

How do I cool the CPU?

What about the PSU - I'm going to need a pico PSU and an external brick. I'm unsure on these. The price seems to shoot up as the power requirements shoots up. How do I work out how much power I need?

I was going reply with quite a short snappy reply, but then realised I didn't expand on what the AD02 actually is.

In short, it is what you've just spec'd!

Why, why not something like the i5 3475S HD4000, 65w TDP. Should be enough.

..edit.. seems to be OEM only that one :|

I'm about to put together an M350 build - putting in an i5 3570k (wanted the HD4000), cooled with a Scythe Kozuti fan.

I've paired it with a P8H77-I mobo (I know it seems weird I put an overclocking cpu with a non overclocking mobo, looking to switch out components in the future)

For the i5 3570k, I'm going ahead with a 160XT Pico PSU with a 192W AC - DC Power brick...

I agree with you re: costs, the total cost of this build made me rethink whether I should've gone with a larger case but the VESA mount capability was the clincher for me

p.s. due to the 62mm height of the case and the relative size of the cpu fan, I picked up 8GB samsung green RAM since its low height... couldnt find any other RAM which would be of similar low height

What has been the total cost of that; I'm still toying with the idea of just cancelling my Netflix account and sticking with the AD02 for now!

Let us know how you get on with that, temps / noise in particular.

I'd be tempted to get an overclockable CPU and mono and then down clock and under volt the CPU.

wrt RAM, in my AD02 the RAM sits flat like in a laptop - I guess that's not common with Mini ITX boards!

GeX,

finally got all my components together and put it into the M350 case...

Everything is great (thanks OcUK for my RAM!)

HOWEVER

I can't mount the Scythe Kozuti and my 2.5" HDD together e.g. the HDD footprint overlaps the heatsink footprint so that the HDD rests on the top of the heatsink, preventing me from locking in the case cover..

Not sure how im going to get around this one..

mSATA isnt exactly cheap and the Kozuti is doing a great job of temps

any hints?

p.s. Cheetah Designs, how did you get the Kozuti and HDD inside in the end?

Just Velcro / double sided tape the drive elsewhere inside the case!

I have kept the Kozuti, but have had to mount the 2.5" hdd OUTSIDE the case (no mods made to the case)... Its not the best work around at the moment but the M350 isnt visible anyway - can adjust it in the future

In Short: The M350 (Asus P8H77-I) and Scythe Kozuti DO NOT allow sufficient space for HDD mounting inside the case! You may have better luck with the AsRock Z77 as it has been done before

Overall though, I'm very happy with the build - WEI rating for i5 3570k is 7.6, Samsung RAM is 7.8 and HD4000 is 6.5

(according to Asus Utilities)
Temps:
CPU hovers around 40deg (used MX-3), Motherboard around 40deg also -- under normal usage eg installing, basic browsing

Noise:
Kozuti is roughly at 2000rpms and Rasurbo 40mm x 10mm is at 2700rpms
The Kozuti is very quiet, majority of noise comes from the Rasurbo (continuous low pitch hum) - considering removing the Rasurbo as temps are comfortable.

Hope that helps - will put up some photos once i get an account

Total cost of build was about 500gbp incl. CPU, Asus Mobo, M350 case, Rasurbo casefan, all of the picopsu kit, kozuti, Samsung ram and asus wifi dongle... the CPU, Mobo and RAM were from the UK but the rest was bought in the US.

Re: CPU fan, I was considering mixing up the Akasa AK-CC7111 heatsink with a self-mounted case fan but this low profile Noctua HSF (http://www.noctua.at/pdf/noctua_computex_2012_press_kit.pdf) might suit better...

GeX, Let me know how your build goes!

Zbox ID82, definitely. It's a standard sized ZBox, centred around an i3-2330m. (Sandy Bridge, 2 cores, 2.2GHz, Hyperthreading.) Plenty of grunt to handle Netflix, and while HD3000 graphics aren't great they should be good enough. Swap over the HDD and RAM from your AD02, put an OS on it, and you're good.

Is it enough grunt for 30GB MKV's do you think? I can get one (ID82 Plus) for £310 over here. Alternatively, I could build a AMD A8 3870k-based machine for around £210. Hmm, decisions decisions...

EDIT - This seems like a good spec:

  • Thermaltake Element Q VL52021N2E inc 220w PSU
  • Intel Core i3 2120T BOX, 2.5GHz, LGA 1155, 2C/4T, 35W TDP
  • ASRock H61M-ITX, Intel H61, LGA1155, Mini-ITX
  • Kingston ValueRAM, 2x4GB Kit, DDR3-1066, CL7
  • Corsair Force3 120GB

All that for £283! Power draw on that 2120T is also very small at 35w TDP, and according to Newegg reviews the thing has serious grunt.
