Hi

I'm getting the SMART early warning HD failure messages. Does this definitely mean that the HD will be toast? I've now switched over to another HD to be on the safe side but just want to know if there are any diagnostic tools i can use to check out the drive.

HD = Samsung HD 753LJ ATA

Cheers

You can use crystal disk Info to read the SMART values to see what's actually gone wrong.
Most manufactures have a diagnostic utility you can download, to let you know if it needs RMA`ing

Maybe not toast, i had a "reallocated sector count" , which is one of the many SMART tests, fail on a drive. After running some tests and trying to install windows, it become obvious that the bad sectors were mainly at the start of the drive so i just create a new partition starting at about 20gigs and the second partition works great not had any problems with it, so i have lost the first 20gigs of my drive but still have the other 140gigs. Wee tip for you. And download Hiren boot CD it has quite a few useful things on it.
