Smart Meters with Different Suppliers

Has anyone any experience of having smart meters installed when gas and leccy are with different suppliers?

E : This was fit last week by E.ON. Gave me an IHD which only showed me "in the moment" what was being used. No tariff information / costs were coming through.

G : This was fit yesterday by EDF. He said the E.ON IHD was rubbish and would give me one of theirs. This shows the gas usage and costs, but doesn't show anything to do with the electric.

The original E.ON IHD now also shows "in the moment" gas usage, but nothing else and still no cost info for the electric.

Ideally I want to see it all working properly on the IHD which EDF provided as it is a much better system.

My understanding is that the comms unit and measurements are nothing to do with the suppliers as they are on a third party WAN system and thus should send both G and E data to the IHD - So why are neither of the ones I have been given showing up all the full info?

Trying to get customer support from EDF to fix, but difficult as they are offshore and don't seem to understand the issue.

Anyone had this and know how it was resolved at all?

@BigBoy

Hes a EDF Meter Tech so should be able to shed some light. Personally i can only imagine that when the EDF tech went out they recommissioned the EON electricity meter at the same time? Typically the gas communicates its Smart functionality through the Elec meter unless somethings changed or there is a workaround or EDF installed a third party hub for the Gas but then that doesnt make sense that the Gas is now showing on the EON IHD which suggests both meters have been commissioned at the same time?

Get thats SmartView2 in the bin absolute waste of a PCB!

@Zenduri Thanks :) Technical specialist I will have you know ;)

@BDEE It sounds like the E.on part of your SM system needs a reboot, this is performed by a meter tech removing the mains fuse to reset the system and reboot both the meter and the comms hub then all data will show on the EDF IHD.

Gas reading on the IHD will only be periodical as the meter is only read every 30 mins due to not wanting to wear out the battery in the smart meter and how difficult it actually is to measure passage of gas in small quantities.

Haha - Yes is does seem rather inferior compared to the other one.

OK - I will see what E.On say when the eventually reply to my message and will make that suggestion to them if they don't have any ideas. Which they probably won't if the experience of the installation is anything to go by!

Thanks

Hey man I was just supplied the EDF IHD as I rang up to request one

I didn't get one when I bought my house from previous owners.

However after further investigation I think this meter is a V1 smart. The IHD doesn't work but edf have told me to wait a while while it's commissioned?

I'm using the Geo IHD, I have doubts whether this is going to work. I'd really like to start seeing my usage in real-time

It still isn't working yet.

It's a gen 1 / SMETS1 Meter, I believe it's a Secure branded Samsung meter, with a digital keypad.

The IHD they have sent you should function correctly if it gets set up if.

Well - I spoke to E.ON, who were useless, saying that they "can't access" anything to do with the gas since it is not with them and that is the reason it will not show both fuels on my IHD.

I told her this was utter rubbish.

She said:

"I contacted our smart metering team to see if it were possible to do such a reset but because we don't supply the gas ourselves, we have no access to the supply information (units rates that you are paying etc) therefore unfortunately we couldn't connect your gas smart meter to our IHD. Sorry we can't be of more assistance on this particular issue."

So I told her that it was totally broken and not sending anything at all to my IHD and someone is coming out on 6th May.

What is even funnier, is I had a letter from them yesterday asking if I wanted a smart meter...........!?!?!?!?

So I have no idea what they have done and if it is even working or not.

@BigBoy any advice on what to ask the technician when they come or do you think it literally just needs a hard reset on the meter and comms unit? I am still in the same state of play - Gas only on the good IHD and only showing my in the moment usage on the terrible one (no unit rate, spend etc).

The Need to decommission/remove the old IHD (SmartView2) then the one from EDF will pick up the electric as well, E.On are as usual just dragging feet and not doing the work they are supposed to to keep the system happy.

Thanks - I will see if I can have a sensible conversation with the technician when they come. I suspect that may prove difficult, unless they send a contractor.

I know we've interacted before on the merit of smart meters. But your first comment adds to my frustration with them. Why the hell can energy suppliers not even agree on an a universal IHD product.

My energy supplier provided a SmartView2, which provides data which may be useful. Is there a specific issue with these types of IHD and what, if any, options are available for the consumer to change / upgrade etc?

There are several options on IHD each supplier makes choices based on cost per device as the IHD is a supplier purchased and gifted to the end user item. The SmartView2 is IIRC the cheapest device available.

As a consumer you can purchase a CAD that will give you cloud access to your data if you so wish for integration into home automation (smart things, home assistant and so on) these are allowed devices to be added to the smart network and you can purchase them directly from GEO and Chameleon.
