Smart phone advise for a noob

iPhone4 and Desire = retard suggestions

yup

typical of the mobile forum though

ask for a cheap phone. get recommended the top of the range ones

OP i would look for things like tmobile pulse , htc hero/legend , samsungs cheaper android phones. maybe even on pay as you go with a free texts/data add on

he said he doesnt make many calls/texts so a £25 contract with 500minutes and texts etc is nothing but a bad idea

I don't really have the cash at hand right now to pay the full price of a handset though :(

I am a little daunted at being locked into a contract for 2 years though.

If I ring up a network directly would I be able to negotiate a better/more appropriate deal?

The op wants a portable device for browsing the web.

What's wrong with recommending a £15 contract + free desire/galaxy S?

Robbos additional iPhone 4 comment was brief and and stated it might be too expensive.

My Dell streak suggestion is for a data contract only.

Both suggestions get you a free phone and have relativity cheap contracts for what you get.

Whats your problem with that andy?

Well, he was going to end up paying £10+ a month, how do you know for certain he wouldn't want to pay £17 and have a Desire for example?

You don't. Stop getting all upset over a suggestion, really, haven't you folks got anything better to worry about?

And yes, the Carphone Warehouse are fine, not had a problem with them or Mobiles.co.uk.

Any of the mid to low end HTC android offerings should see you right - HTC Legend (or Hero if you fancy spending less) would be good, Wildfire is ok too but a lower res screen might be off putting. Perhaps see what can be had second hand/refurbed and get a sim only deal?

edit: Perhaps even an Iphone 3G/3GS might be an ok idea?

For example, you just recommended a 3GS, which is worse than, and costs more than a Desire.

I like the idea of the T-Mobile Pulse on pay as you go but all the complaints about battery life are putting me off.

What kind of battery life are you hoping for, most smartphones have fairly bad battery life so dont be expecting a week or even half of that out of one.

Well some of the reviews are saying the pulse needs charging every 12 hours even with light use!

Whats the Samsung Galaxy Apollo like?

You can get it on t-mobile with 300 mins, 300 texts and unlimited* web for £15 a month + £9.99 for the handset.

Mobiles.co.uk isn't giving me very many details on these contracts. I can't find how much the unlimited web is actually limited too.

The wildfire and the galaxy apollo seem like the cheapest options but their screens are quite small.

The desire is pretty tempting but I would have to hand over a lot of cash up front for a cheaper contract.

That's a fairly decent deal for the Samsung galaxy apollo (check out the techradar review)

Don't get too caught up by unlimited internet on mobile networks though, a 500mb cap will be enough if you have access to wifi at home. 1GB adds extra leeway for streaming vids/music.
3GB+ is good if you don't have regular access to broadband. (unless your tethering you prob won't get near this with a galaxy Apollo btw)

explained my problem with it above. so did others. where can you get a desire or galaxyS for £15 a month ? you cant

Where have you been? The moon? mobiles.co.uk + quidco. loads of people on here got one, including me. :p

Ok, I think I'm edging towards the apollo. I'll go down the the carphone warehouse tomorrow and see if they have one I can try out. I'll also have a play on my lodgers phone (I think it's a desire) as I've never actually used a smart phone before. Are there any websites with information on network coverage in certain areas?

Each network has a coverage map online but they can be ropey. It's best to get the free payg sims and check the 3g coverage/speed yourself (esp with a 24 month contract)

Well I'm going to be taking it down to portsmouth but I want it before I go so that wont really help.

I'm sure somewhere like Portsmouth would have decent coverage though. I'll try and find out if anyone I know down there is on T-Mobile.

T-mobile seem to be good atm, specially with the 3GB limit on andriods. I heard orange and t-mobile are merging and t-mobile have a deal with 3 phones as well so it works out that you will be able to obtain signal from all 3 networks if im not mistaken.

3 and t-mobile launched a venture, joint ownership of 3g masts. The integration is not complete (as of a couple of months ago).

Orange and T-mobile have just started letting people register for 2g roaming across their networks. I haven't seen any indication of when 3g roaming will be ready.

I think the HTC Hero, T-Mobile Pulse, LG Optimus GT540, Samsung Galaxy Portal, Galaxy Apollo is the rough section of the market you should be looking at. These devices avoid the minuscule screen resolutions of the Pulse Mini, Wildfire, X10 Mini, etc which would be an issue for something specifically for web use.

The LG has the inferior resistive touch screen though.

Tbh the apollo's screen isn't that much higher res than the wildfire. The LG has a much higher res screen but like you said it's resistive and it only runs android 1.6 :(

The Hero looks good but you can't get it on T-Mobile, which had the really good deals.

Edit: Wow, the guy at the carphone warehouse was totally useless. Was pretty clear I knew more on the matter than he did. They didn't have any apollos either.

Maybe I should just get a Desire with a cheap contract and hand out the £200 for the handset.

Do they still do it? Can't find it on their site.

I think my problem now is that I don't want to spend more than I need too. But I don't want to get a cheaper phone and then decide it doesn't do what I want it to as well as I would like.

HMMMM

I just looked up the difference between restivitive and capative screens

I dunno why people say its well not as good, resistive has its advtanges some are qestionable

they have as many drew backs as advantages.

well to me anyway

capative
only works with fingers so you can clean it or something abrasive...so it you wanna use a stylus it has to have something on the end of it or it won't respond.
faster than restistive.
more 'fun'
captive i think is the only tech to use multi touch.

disadvtange, can't use anything to use the device
not as accurate ( dunno about that)
cost
need a special staylus

resistive
good accuracy (appnrelty yet to try out)
can use anything to use the device
cheaper to imperment

disadvtange of that
no multi touch
gotta be carefull while cleaning
not as fast
not as fun somehow
