Hi guys,

I'm sure this has been done over and over... but I'm in need of honest advice.
Lock this if you really must:(

I want to make the move as I'm still on a Sony Ericsson W800i. 1.)Its becoming embarrassing and 2.) I want to browse the internet and take advantage of the apps.

I've decided the iPhone is too expensive and I've spent the entire evening trying to contemplate whether I should get the Galaxy over the Desire.

Galaxy is more expensive and it looks like it needs quite a bit of tinkering to get the most out of... I'm sure I could do it, but will it be worth it.

The Desire on the other hand is cheaper (I'm in Holland so I'm looking at a 1 year contract with Vodafone and a one time fee, so a total of around 459pounds when I'm done with the contract it includes everything I need and a 1GB limit on internet each month which I'm happy with as I'm not really a multimedia whore, just a text browser + the facebook).

The Galaxy will come in at 518pounds so am really wondering whether the screen is really worth it considering the HTC Sense UI seems a big player in reviews.

(Oh and I'm getting a 1 year contract because I know when I start getting into these phones I'll want a new one...and I might be returning to the UK for my masters).

Then theres all this talk about the new Android processors out in Q1 2011, something I've only glanced over..

Decisions decisions and I can't decide.....help!

There is only one real advantage of the Galaxy S over the Desire, and that is the Super LED (SAMOLED) screen over a normal Super LCD screen.

The SAMOLED screen displays blacks as black and produces far better colours for things like video watching etc. The only real downside to SAMOLED is the pentile matrix of the screen which makes small text difficult to read if you are zoomed out on a web page for example.

The Desire has a slightly lower MP camera (that doesn't mean its worse quality, they look similar to me) and its camera has a flash. The Galaxy S also has slightly better 720P video recording, if that is an important factor.

Sense UI on the Desire blows the TouchWiz UI on the Galaxy out of the water, Sense UI is one of the main reasons for Android's success, it is fantastic.

The Desire HD is another option, it is basically a normal Desire beefed up with new software, a much bigger screen and a better camera. That is the phone I am using at the moment and it is absolutely superb.

Also, dont feel like you are losing out because the iPhone 4 is 'too expensive', you can very easily argue the Desire/SGS/Desire HD/etc are better. Feature wise, Android is king.

With regard to the near future, the new Google flagship phone is potentially being announced in the next few weeks, and that will likely be a large SAMOLED display, 8-10MP camera and have all the new fancy internals, dual core CPU, etc.

In short - get the Desire, or wait.

I went through the same process when deciding on mine.

The SGS screen threw me in the end. Boy is it nice, but I did use/hold both in the shops and it wasn't an easy decision. No way would you be disappointed with either though. The best things about the SGS are the screen and the blistering speed (on 2.2 or 2.1 lag fixed). The worst thing is that it looks like an iphone.

I also should mention the Desire has a slightly better build quality to it. That doesn't mean the SGS is badly made, its just lighter, a bit plasticky and looks a bit like its trying to be an iPhone 3G/3GS.

The Desire certainly feels better in the hand with the finish to the back of it.

I can certainly agree with that. The construction of the SGS is light and plastic (but not bad as such), however the Desire is heavier and metal, feels a lot nicer as robbo says.
