You know, before smart phones, i enjoyed life more !

I didn't get work related emails out of hrs.(which really annoy the heck out of me). I may of rec'd a call every now and again, but people would only call if it was an emergency.

Now smart phones, which are pretty much compulsory in business, allows the worker to be on call every day and every night.. Unfortunately people do not respect your privacy and allow you time off, and i find myself checking and replying to work emails at all hrs. It's just given the bosses and those above a tool to get more out of the worker.

And well if you don't like it and start ignoring and not replying then you're not doing your job as well as the next person could do it...

I really wish in a way that they hadn't been invented.

I hardly use any of the apps anyway ! just a damn tool for answer work emails on, in my own time. Seems to be getting worse. Now its the norm to receive emails at all hrs, and you're just 'expected' to reply.

Turn it off then?

Switch synchronisation off?

So really your issue is your employer not smartphones.

You're missing the point fellas. Of course i can turn it off. But that doesn't bode too well with your employer. Its the culture now to be requesting things out of hrs, BECAUSE of the smart phone.

Maybe at your employer... I don't think smart phones create this culture, as much as employees do by actually answering the calls and emails. If people didn't do that to start with, the culture wouldn't exist. Nowt to do with the technology.

Lola. Just have two phones.
And smart phones are amazing.

As pointed out, nothing you said is against the smartphone, just you inability to separate work from life.

My come back is always the same, if I happen to be around the phone I'll pick it up. But it's a work phone so I don't take it out with me. Of you want to pay me on call, then I'll carry it around with me all the time. Generally its fine as most of the time, it's we've messed up can you do overtime. we did have to have a discussion with them, going you know we are on nights, why the **** are you phoning me at 10am.

Sorry but I have no sympathy for you. Blaming your smartphone is not the solution. The solution is manning up and telling your employer it's unacceptable what they are doing. Man up or the next man will !

I make a concerted effort not to use my phone as much now as I used to. It's useful definitely, and I embrace the technology, but I don't want to rely on it.

As for work outside of office hours? Yeah right!

If you aren't being paid to be on call then ignore it. These problems are your own creation.

Do you blame sleeping bags for encouraging you to sleep next to your desk?
