anyone got a tab for the easy riff part?

Play the open D and G notes together and that gives you the opening 'chord'.
Then go up to the 3rd fret and then the 5th and also use the 6th fret and the 2nd bar.
I'm sure you can work it out from there.

These two notes played together are Blackmores most favourite 'power chords' and he uses it in loads of tunes.

I always use the F bar chord, from position 3, 6 and 8 (with the 9 position for the higher one) for the riff. Pinched it off the School of Rock special features DVD, sounds perfect to the Made in Japan album

I can tell you with 100% accuracy that is how Blackmore plays it.
I think its called 4ths (maybe 3rds).

It works with 5ths but its not right.

The first bit on this is playing in 5ths - sounds OK but not right.
The second bit is played the proper way in Nitefly's.
I've also done the Made In Japan version so that Ritchie could point at the audience.

I always told it was correct to pluck the two notes at the same time with your fingers rather than striking them 'at the same time' with a pick.

It is plucked and not strummed as well but my mate knows just about everything in the universe about Deep Purple and listened to an interview with Blackmore where he said that. Not that I can play guitar mind.

Hmm, I always thought it was plucked but theres no plucking in the video I linked above but he does up picking.

I guess its possible he played it how he felt on any particular evening!

In my opinion the CD definitely has a softer attack than a pick would produce.

As far as I know it was a type of hybrid picking, i.e picking and using the fingers.

I use the pick for the bass strings and my middle finger for the 4ths.

I'm sure I saw on the Telly (may have been 'classic albums') that the riff was actually played through the keyboard on the album. In fact I'm convinced of it.

It was definitely Blackmore's Marshall Majors and not the keyboards. Reason being that the Majors are so pushed to maximum that putting a pedal in the front end will blow the OT and this had happened to Blackmore on occasions.
