smoker/mileage car needed

You don't need driving fun when you are going to be skiing at the other end. ;)

Maybe not, but unless he's going every month, is the extra economy going to be worth it?

<2000 mile round trip, and that's if you go via Dover...

Personally I'm not a fan of a turbo in snow.

Can't you leave your kit there and go in the Porsche / fly?

cant fly, ever, i hate it

porsche, whilst nice cant carry skis, boots and/or any of my gear

given previous years this car will easily rack up 30k a year, which i reckon is worth it, after an hour driving the VW life gets pretty rough!

I'd be worried about 180bhp in something the size of an A6 loaded up with gear sking gear and having to do 30k in it with diesel gearing.

Do Audi not do a better diesel engine in the A6?

Audi a6 avant 3.0tdi quattro tiptronic. 2-3yrs old and 45mpg on the autoroute. Great car for the long trips and usually specced with all the toys. Allroad would be good too

Edit. Nobody bothers with the 2.7 as the 3.0 is faster and returns nearly the same economy.

It does 60 in just over 8 seconds. The 2.0 170 would carry 4 people in comfort without ever feeling strained or slow - the 2.7 is plenty

I still think the E320 CDI is the best car listed here.
Much more space than an E60, and probably more suited to what you want, too.
