smoker/mileage car needed

E320 CDI a good shout as well, I'd imagine you can get quite a new one as well. I think its good to strike a balance between age and ability here.

£20,000 is a lot of money to spend on 2006 cars or older that are not really high end models, frankly.
 
I know I'll probably just get shouted at for poking my nose into Motors. :p But how about a Skoda Superb estate? You can buy one spanking new for just over £20k, at top Elegance spec with full heated electric leather, built-in voice activated SatNav and full bluetooth pack, automatic everything, adaptive xenon lighting, all the usual toys etc etc.

If you went second hand, you'd get a nice DSG automatic one basically a couple of months old for well under budget. They return around 55mpg to 60mpg combined (depending on engine choice) and are very, very comfortable. If you can live without leather, you're looking at 15k or so for an auto fully loaded luxobarge estate.

Yes I know it's not a BMW but it's solidly built and supremely comfortable. They also hold their value as well as any Mercedes. The interior space is bigger than a Mercedes S Class, and it takes a BMW 7 series long wheel base to match it for size. Just about 15k cheaper... Just a thought.

<£20k is Mondeo or Citroen money and a three year old Mondeo will have lost a lot more money than your average top-spec Superb and you got a better car for it (for the OP's reqs anyway). That's all I meant. :)

Fair enough. As I said just a suggestion. A quick look at the AutoTrader shows a lot of £3k to £4k Mondeos on 07/57 plates, whereas Superbs on those plates start at around £5k and go up from there. A full leather, fully loaded one will surely cost more. How's the Superb a bad suggestion based on the OP's list of wants?

EDIT: A quick check on the usual valuation sites (eg Parkers) shows a Mondeo Titanium 2.0 to be around the same price (within a couple of quid) as a Superb Elegance 2.0 on a 57 plate. Since the Superb is more car for the money (again especially given the OP's requirements) I don't see how it was a bad recommendation?

Personally I would go 5 series touring for carting lots of ski gear - swallows up my snowboarding stuff nicely. I have petrol one but drove a 530d a few weeks ago and it was good, if a bit noisy:p
