Snow & Freezing Weather back for Xmas week - Will we be ready?

Sky don't know what the weather will be like, we can barely get it right 3 days in advance, let alone a few weeks. This is why I don't watch Sky news. It's a waste of space.

I agree, but regardless of that better preparation should be taken by everyone (not just authorities) incase of more severe weather.

Personally I am going to hope for the best with a flight back to blighty on the 19th, as I don't want to get stuck here over Christmas or even worse stuck in Heathrow.

Apart from apathy, one problem I see about people clearing roads themselves is liability. These days there are too many instances of people getting sued for silly things no one wants to take the risk. If you try and clear it you are then responsible I believe. Hence why many carparks etc are left covered.

Maybe another problem is that most people still try and go out, even when maybe they shouldn't and/or police are advising against travel. Doesn't really matter how much or little there is, if too many cars get stuck everything will stop. There should be more acceptance of trying to encourage working from home. I did last year and whilst there were things I couldn't do I also got a lot more 'bits' done as I wasn't constantly interrupted. I still felt guilty though when I went back in.

I'm going to Prague on the 22nd of December for Christmas, hopefully I get out from Edinburgh (and get to the airport in the first place) and hopefully I get stuck in Prague for a while. :D

In the USA they have grit bins on all the side roads. When it gets icy the residents grit the roads themselves...saves the government money on gritters without leading to shedloads of cars going all over the shop.

Even if they had grit bins every 200yds in this country, the general "not my job so why should I" attitude would see this as a waste.

I'd like to see this kind of attitude changed

A colleague of mine who is in his 60's spent an hour gritting and clearling the hill on the road he lives on, only one neighbour thanked him :(

It sucks, I spent the whole week keeping our entire cul de sac clear of snow so people could come and go with there cars if they wished. Not one thanked me, its not why I did it but still. A little recognition when walking past me scooping snow would be nice. :(

If we do get some next week at least I'll be off work so that a) i dont have to faff about to try and get out and b) I can help clear the road. Just no way I could do it getting up at 5 and getting home at 10 last week.

Hope it doesn't stop the relatives getting to us for xmas day though, Its our first xmas in our first home!

We've got a grit bin on the next street - I've lived here for about 11 months and I've never seen any grit in it.

We live on the end of a quiet cul-de-sac which was really, really icy last week. Our bit of the street has the little turning circle bit, and it was getting so bad that tbh, I was worried about people skidding and ending up bumping my car (couldn't get up my drive as it's on a slope so had to leave it on the street) so we managed to get some rock salt and the bf tried clearing it himself. No-one on the street came out to see if he needed a hand or to say thanks, and the ice was so thick that he didn't manage to do a great deal, but he had a good go.
